"There are two roadblocks in the way of transforming India into an economic giant and one of them was education. I believe that if education is privatised at the primary and secondary level, lot of our problems will be answered to" ~ Kumar Mangalam Birla
The fight to reach and remain at the top is a common practice in running the business in the private sector. Profitability and gaining market share has been a vital force behind thriving in the overly competitive landscape of the global economy. The corporate sector has identified that they need to look beyond the profitability and take into consideration all the stakeholders who directly or indirectly impacted by their decisions. Corporates are now taking care of societal issues, and one organisation who is seeking huge leaps into this foray is Aditya Birla group. Aditya Birla group is a fortune 500 private multi-national conglomerate company in India operating in over 35 countries employing more than one lakh individuals. The group operates in diversified sectors such as Information technology, Cement (Ultratech cement), retail (pantaloons, Aditya Birla retail limited), telecom (Vodafone idea limited), metal (Hindalco), financial services, fertilisers, BPO, Grasim industries and branded apparels. It is the third biggest private sector conglomerate of India only behind Reliance India Limited and TATA group.
Initiatives by Aditya Birla group in the upliftment of rural societies are contributing in the areas as infrastructure development, healthcare, education, social causes and sustainable livelihood. I completed a project on how corporate MNCs were helping in the upliftment of rural households when I came across the initiatives by the Aditya Birla group. Aditya Birla group has setup Aditya Birla centre which carries out all their community program. Each project is carried out in an interactive mode where the requirements and needs of the community are analysed and measured with the key focus in improving the livelihood of the people.
When I visited my village Uttarakhand, I came to know about their school Aditya Vikram Birla Institute of learning, which is run by Prakash Education Society, a pioneer in the field of education. When I studied about their other programs in the education sector, I found out that the group is doing work in formal and informal education, providing scholarship to economically weaker sections and girl students. Digital literacy programs, distance education initiatives and computer education are also some focus areas to improve the technical skills and increase the pool of individuals to the literate class. Within the group, each company is also involved in various CSR activities helping the society in one way or the other.
About myself, I come from a small town in northeast Delhi called Shahdara. Being in Delhi, I got access to the best education facilities but always doubted about my contribution back to society. I got an AIEEE rank of 6000 and got admission in Delhi Technological University (formerly Delhi College of Engineering). Enthusiastic about helping the community in any way, I found some like-minded people, and we started a club called "GoGreen@DTU" with the sole objective of spreading awareness of environmental issues to every section of society. We organised various sessions in different colleges and schools to increase awareness among the students for a greener campus and city• We also try to amplify increased involvement through various theme-based events regularly. We were appreciated by our Vice-chancellor for our initiative. Currently GoGreen@DTU is active and working towards achieving a greener campus and greener city.
