In 2007, the first shopping mall was built in my hometown. During that time, a new outlet “Planet Fashion” was opened, wherein my family and I used to shop often. Though I learnt that Aditya Birla Group was the conglomerate under which Planet Fashion operated much later, the collections, it was my one stop solution for all apparel needs for years. Collection, marketing and outlook of Planet Fashion was so different from their other subsidiaries and were so in tune with the youngsters and teenagers that nobody would have thought that the conglomerate which operates Grasim was the same as that operating Planet Fashion. While Grasim had served in the city for decades, and was a huge hit for formal and festive wears, for casual wears Planet Fashion had captured a large chunk of the market rapidly. And brands like Louis Philippe, Allen Solly, Van Heusen, Peter England and People, a combination of formal and casual wears had captured the awe of different age groups equally. For all of us belonging to the Tier-2 city, able to buy the latest apparels at affordable prices was undoubtedly a significant change brought upon by the Aditya Birla Group. This has been done by the conglomerate in 100s of cities in India over the last two decades. And later on when Pantaloons came up, it gave an altogether new definition to apparel shopping.
