There’s a clichéd line in the corporate world. If you are an aspirant with dreams of joining the cream of B-schools in the country, you have probably heard it too. It goes something like this, “What makes the IIMs stand out from the rest of 3000-odd B-Schools in India?”
Each B-school refers the likes of Kotlers and what-nots for various courses. The course content can be structured in a way that can be similar. So, what is it that makes these institutes carve out a a special place for themselves? The answer is the curriculum at these institutes. It’s pretty different from any other education stream out there. I was exposed to this one-of-a-kind curriculum when I joined IIM Rohtak in June 2017.
Getting to the specifics, it was a class on a course titled ‘Human Behavior in Organizations’. We were provided with a case related to the concept which was supposed to be discussed beforehand. So, as is usual with renowed academic rigor at IIMs, I went to the class fully prepared with the case, having understood the underlying dilemma, and developing my perspectives by applying the concepts that I had learned to it.
As the lecture started, the professor formed random groups among the students in the classroom and started assigning the roles described in the case to each group member. Then she gave us about 20 mins to discuss and debate about the problem and possible alternative solutions and arrive at a decision.
So there were now 11 ‘business groups’, each with their own perspectives and rationale behind the solution they chose. Each of the groups presented their solutions, with inputs from the professor and the students. Finally, the professor gave a reasoning for each of the solution and the major learning that came out of this classroom discussion was that there is no one perfect solution to a business problem.
Which ABG company would I like to work for and why?
ABG is one of top conglomerates in India which offers roles in the general management domain. As a student who joined IIM Rohtak to specialize in not just one domain, but to gain overall knowledge of all the aspects of business, I would love work for any company of the ABG group in the general management domain. But if I have to choose, I would like to work for Idea Cellular Ltd since I have interest in working in the telecom sector. Also, I have a cousin who works for the company and hence I know about its work culture.
