Key Changes To IIM Shillong's Latest Selection Criteria For 2021-2023

The IIM Shillong admission criteria have been released and we agree – they can be super tricky for any candidate who has not studied statistics. Don’t worry, we are there to break it down for you. Here are the biggest changes in the IIM S selection criteria for admission to the PGP batch of 2023, and what it means for you.

Here's what's changed in the latest IIM Shillong admission policy for admission to the PGP batch of 2021-2023:

1. The minimum percentage requirement while shortlisting candidates for the PI round in 10^th, 12^th and graduation has been removed. This is extremely beneficial for all those candidates who had low percentages and could not participate last year. The requirement was as high as 80% for 10^th and 12^th
2. Weightage of GD while deciding Final shortlist has been removed. The selection now entirely depends on the CAT score and PI. This is in line with most other B-schools who are removing group discussions as a criteria. Also, considering the pandemic and problems associated with virtual GD, it might have been eliminated.

IIM Shillong's Latest Admission Process Explained In 3 Simple Steps The IIM Shillong admission process is a three-step process. The first step is eliminating candidates based on the minimum CAT 2020 cut-off, followed by the second step of shortlisting candidates based on a certain set of criteria, followed by the final step of conducting interviews and creating the final shortlist for admission to the PGP batch.

Step 1 - Eliminating Candidates Based on CAT 2020 Scores -

The minimum requirement of marks for consideration in different categories of candidates –

Note- These are just minimum eligibility criteria percentiles, the actual cut-offs may be much higher. If you do not clear any of these cut-offs, you are directly eliminated.

Step 2 - Shortlisting Candidates for The Personal Interview Round

The candidates obtained from the above filtering are then classified into 7 academic categories. The applicants are segregated based on their academic category AC 1 to AC 7 (please check the academic category classification at the end of the article) and reservation category. Applicants of each academic category will be shortlisted proportional to their representation in the overall number of applicants. For instance, if 65% of the overall applicants belong to AC-2, then 65% of the shortlisted candidates would be belonging to that category. This ensures that all candidates get a fair and proportional chance. Within each academic category, the percentage of calls given to the candidates of each reservation category is listed below:

• No. of calls to the ST category candidates = 7.5% of total calls
• No. of calls to the SC category candidates = 15.0% of total calls
• No. of calls to the Other category candidates = 67.5% of total calls
• No. of calls to the EWS category candidates = 10% of total calls

Out of all these candidates, 5% will comprise of Differently abled candidates.

The required number of candidates from each academic category and reservation category will be called for the PI round based on their CAT Score.

 Step 3 - Creating the Final Shortlist for Admission To IIM Shillong's PGP Batch of 2023

The score of the PI performance of each shortlisted candidate will be normalized. These normalized scores will account for 70% and normalized CAT scores will account for the remaining 30% of the final score that will be used for final selection of candidates. Final Merit Score = 70% (Normalized PI Score) + 30% (Normalized overall CAT score)  Candidates will need to ensure that they meet the minimum cut-off performance in the PI round in order to land a final offer. The cut-off in terms of a percentage of minimum performance in PI to the maximum possible score in the round is given below -

What Does IIM Shillong’s Latest Selection Criteria Mean for You?

1. Good news first – Even if you scored a little less in your 10^th,12^th or graduation, IIM Shillong will not punish you for that. What matters is having a high CAT score and impressive interview. Those are the only 2 parameters on which you will be judged.
2. The sectional cut-offs remain the same at the 75th percentile (for general category), which is a highly achievable score.
3. Unlike last year, where PI only had a 50% weightage, it has been increased to 70% last year. In case of an average interview, you could still salvage your candidate last year with a stellar GD. This year, with GD being eliminated, PI becomes more crucial – almost like a Do or Die.
