A memorable class experience: We hold onto some memories either because of the positive outlooks associated with it or maybe because of the embarrassment and learnings we experience through it. Though each day at IIM has taught me several learnings and experiences, there is this incident I think of at times because of the mixed emotions I had that day. It happened on a Sunday in the first year, wherein we had a workshop on a tool taken by Prof. XYZ. Though he is known for his grumpy plus strict attitude, he is one of the excellent professors we have on campus. It was a voluntary session, and there was me who woke up in the morning at 8 am, went to the classroom to attend the session. As soon as I entered and opened my laptop, to my utter astonishment, I realised that the software necessary for the workshop was not loading in my laptop. There was a group of people (my fellow batch mates) organizing the event, who were walking around installing the software for those who had not got it installed. I was sitting there confidently waiting for my laptop to load the software when one of my friends sitting beside me called the organizing team to help the software to be installed in his laptop. There was confusion going around beside me where my friend was talking about his laptop getting hanged, the organizer convincing the issue is not with his USB but my friend’s laptop etc. etc. They decided to find the truth by asking me to connect the USB in my laptop to which I agreed. As soon as the USB was connected to my laptop, with the organizer standing beside me, entered the professor. The first question he asked the one beside me was why he wasn’t settled to which he replied, “I am helping them to install the software”. The professor asked him to settle down and then, it took him about half an hour to finish scolding me in various ways asking the basic question why I do not have the software installed with me when I had come to attend a workshop on that particular tool. I didn’t answer him and listened to all without a word. After the class commenced, he started teaching but I felt it took him time to get back to his composure after all the energy he spent on scolding me. Though I felt bad about the whole episode as it was not completely my fault, it taught me a lot that day. Though I am a proactive person, I learnt how a small mistake on my part on not checking whether the tool worked in my laptop the previous day caused all the havoc. If yes, I could have proved him showing that I had the necessary software with me. How my carelessness affected the mood of the professor and iteratively affected the 60+ students in the classroom who woke up in the morning and came to attend the session. Thereafter, till date, I have tried my best not to repeat any similar carelessness ever on my part. And yes, it is one of the most memorable classroom experiences I had in IIM. Which AB Group Company I would like to work for? Though, as any management graduate I would happily accept an offer to work for any company under the ABG group, if I had to pick one, I would opt for Aditya Birla Retail Limited. It is the fourth largest supermarket chain in the country that caters to the consumer products needs of the mass market. I would like to work in the organization under operation and supply chain domain. It would be an excellent opportunity for me to work for the firm and gain experience in the sector I wish to set my career path on.
