The second most populated city in the state of Jharkhand is Dhanbad. Normally, this would've been the very first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the name Dhanbad. Hidden in this mining city is an emerald, Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad. Established in 1926, by recommendation of The McPherson Committee, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad is one of the oldest engineering institutions in India. It was established as a premier institute of Mining and Geology. ‘Indian School of Mines’ became Indian Institute of Technology in the year 2016. The retention of ‘ISM’ in its name even after becoming an IIT is a testament to its prestigious legacy.
Coming to management studies, the institute established its Department of Management Studies in 1977. DMS, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad offers MBA programs in Core and in Business Analytics (with the entire third semester dedicated to internship) and M.Tech programme in Industrial Engineering and Management. It is the only IIT department to offer a full time 2 year MBA programme in Business Analytics with a full semester dedicated to industry internship. The Department of Management Studies is blessed with its highly accomplished faculty members. From experts in their respective subjects with careers spanning multiple decades to young professors with hands-on experience in the new industry environment propels the department in warp drive. DMS offers this rare blend of faculties to its students.
The MBA core programme offers various specializations in the final year. Specializations like Marketing, Finance, Operations and Human Resource are highly sought after.
DMS also hosts a variety of clubs and committees. They provide students insights into the industry by organizing talks with distinguished guests, organizing events for students and many more activities. The committees DMS hosts are Training and Placement Cell, Media and Public Relations Cell, and Alumni Relations Cell. The clubs DMS hosts are Consulting Club, Unstop Igniters Club, Analytics Club and Cultural Club. While the different committees acclimate students for the industry by giving them opportunities to handle various responsibilities within the committees, clubs are tools to enhance the thinking capacity of the students. Clubs help students to learn about organizational methods, problem solving, task delegating, event design from planning to execution and put the students through various real world situations that they will have to face in their careers in management. The clubs also provide opportunities for students to bond with each other and to understand the power of teamwork.
Like any IIT, students from different parts of the country come to the institute for various courses. This diversity presents an incredible opportunity for the students to learn about other states and their cultures. The student diversity also gives a first hand exposure to a small sample size of the country. The highlight of “IIT Experience” is this great blend of student diversity and faculty.
