I interned at JSW Steel, Sales Department. I was assigned a project to estimate steel consumption in tractor and farm industry and build a strategy to enhance sales. It had both market research and strategy development involved. My location was Mumbai but I had to travel to cities like Pune and Delhi, which I feel was the best part.
The selection process was through on-campus recruitment. It involved a personal interview. Most of the questions were based on past work experience. The interview went for around 40-45 mins.
One of the major objectives of my project was to estimate the amount of steel going into the tractor industry through an organized channel and to know the share of business among competitors. This gave me an opportunity to meet and interact with several people belonging to various parts of value chain like employees, customers, vendors, dealers, retailers.
My internship has taught me more than I could have imagined. It gave me a better understanding of my skill set; it helped me gain confidence while approaching people. It made me realize that if you genuinely want something to be done; you will find a way out.
The major challenge which I think almost all of us would have faced is data procurement. Customers are a little reluctant to share their data. But after privacy assurance and continuous follow-ups, they agreed to.
One thing which I liked the most about the JSW group is how they treated the interns. At any point of time in the entire two months stint, I never felt that interns were taken for granted. The company was serious about their projects, they made sure that required help was provided. From the very first day, everything was planned and organized. With all the business heads coming and interacting with us to very thoughtful and custom made goodies. From all the plant visits, business games planned to Parth Jindal himself coming and spending time with us. The pampering did not stop here; they make sure you stay at their best guest houses with the best food available.
Also, one thing which I’ll never forget about my internship is getting to meet Olympic Gold medalist javelin throw champion, Neeraj Chopra. He was staying at the same guest house as ours. I was privileged to interact with him one to one for quite a time. He is such a down to earth soul! I will always be thankful to JSW for such an amazing and unforgettable experience!
All the results which I have obtained from my work during internship would have not been possible without the guidance and supervision of my project buddy Mr. Sunit Pimple and project mentor Mr. Saji Samuel. My Project buddy used frequently travel but he made sure to spare time for me. He used to sit with me to clear my doubts, to provide my thoughts a direction; in other words, he used to bring me back on track whenever lost. He is the best one would wish for, and I am saying this genuinely.
Key takeaways from my summer internship with the JSW Group:
- Being Organised and Structured helps a long way.
- Better concentrate on what you have in hand rather than what you cannot control.
- Stick to the objective and you will be on track.
