Chennai, 15th September 2017Loyola Institute of Business Administration (LIBA), one of India’s prominent management institutes, organised an International Conference on Finance and Economics with the theme ‘Conference to discuss the “Current Trends in Finance and Economics’. Attended by industry veterans, academicians and students, the conference was inaugurated by Padma Vibhushan Dr. C. Rangarajan, Former Governor – Reserve Bank of India, Former Chairman – The Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council and Former Chairman – Twelfth Finance Commission of India. Fr. Christie, Director – LIBA, Mr. Somi Hazari, Managing Director – Shosova Group of Companies along with the distinguished management of LIBA were also present during the inauguration. Delivering the key note address for the conference, Dr. Rangarajan gave a perspective on the Indian macro-economy. He outlined a concise picture of the Indian economic history pre and post-liberalisation. Stressing upon the growth of the Indian economy he highlighted the current issues facing the banking sector. Commenting on the inauguration of the conference, Fr. Christie, Director – LIBA, said “It gives us immense pleasure to be hosting a conference of this scale at LIBA in the presence of industry veterans. This forum has been curated by LIBA to provide an Opportunity to update ourselves about the various dynamics of Finance and Economics. The conference is also a wonderful chance for us to listen to stalwarts like Dr. Rangarajan, to have a better understanding of the Indian Economy and the various opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. It is indeed an honour to have with us today Dr. Rangarajan, who has helped reshape the India economy to a great extent. I am confident that the researchers participating today from across the country will find the conference simulating and challenging.” The conference laid a platform for over for over 75 researchers, academic scholars and industry professionals with cross-disciplinary interests to meet and interact. Spread across two technical sessions, over 25 papers on a variety of topics were presented as part of the conference. With the changing dynamic of India’s economic growth, the conference also brought into limelight various aspects of emerging finance, business and economic trends that drive social, economic and market transformation in the country. The Plenary Speaker in the forenoon session was Mr.Ravi Varanasi, Chief of Business Development, National Stock Exchange of India Ltd., Mumbai, who shared a practitioner’s perspective of the changing dynamics of the stock markets. While giving a macro-perspective of the role of NSE in today’s economy, he stressed on the need for dissemination of information and regulation. He also gave insights to the increased use of technology. The Plenary Speaker in the afternoon session was Mr.Somi Hazari, Managing Director, Shosova Group of Companies, Chennai. He shared the changing ways of Indian economy and how demand could be stimulated. He stressed the need for more localised ways of generating business such that employment could be increased while not compromising on a globalised outlook for the overall economy.
