Located at a short distance from the City of Lakes lies the beautiful and serene campus of one of the fastest growing B-Schools in the country, Indian Institute of Management Udaipur. This is the campus which we have chosen as our new abode, and despite only having spent some nominal days in this land, I cannot but agree that I am mesmerised by its architecture.
The Campus of IIM Udaipur is being constructed right in the laps of the Aravali mountain range in Rajasthan. The initial view from the entrance makes one feel in awe of the structure. But for the new wanderer, many new surprises lie in store. First, the architecture has been so designed that it completely blends with the underlying terrain – a constant chain of the mountains and hillocks that surround the region. So instead of carving the roads right through by cutting through the rocks, they have been made to follow the topographic profile, which results in beautiful twists and turns that one is only subjected to in the scenic places like Mahabaleshwar, Shimla etc.
The architecture of the Academic Block is a piece of art. The main building has been constructed right in between 2 hills, with Students Hostel situated on one and the Faculty accommodation on the other. Work is in progress for a huge lake that will be in the front of the Academic Block. This Lake will only enhance the beauty of the Academic block manifold once completed and will also give it a much-needed touch of Nature. In the centre of the Academic block lies the majestic hanging Library, which is balanced on two sides of 6 storeyed Academic building. The back side of the Academic Block will house an open amphitheatre, which will add to its beauty once completed. But that is not all, even at the ground floor, the profile is not a simple one, but consists of a series of structures and small areas, connected by staircases, which have been built by taking inspiration from traditional Rajasthani architecture.
The students reside in the hostels called as clusters, and all of these surround a central dining hall and an open space. This design has been intelligently created such that minimal time is wasted while commuting from one block to other. Moreover, all the hostels have been constructed from stones cut out of the land of Rajasthan, which give a very distinct texture and feeling to the whole building. Even the faculty bungalows that are being built are being built using a style which is a blend of the styles used in ancient historical forts and modern style.
All in all, I truly believe that this architecture of the IIM Udaipur is one of the most brilliant aspects of this brilliant institution, and once completed, it is surely going to be not only the talk of the town but the entire nation. No wonder then, that the architect of this great institution, BV Doshi became the recipient of the prestigious Pritzker Award. One can only wait for the few more years when the entire construction work will be completed, and the beauty of the magnificent structure will be there for all to enjoy!
