I am a student of IIM Indore. We had eight sections in the First Year of our course, or PGP-I as we call it.
In the Second Term of PGP-I, we had a compulsory course named “ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR-II”, that dealt with managerial dilemmas, ethical choices and more. Most of the sessions for that course involved some case or the other, and the learning objectives were accomplished through the cases only. Our instructor was really inspiring and enthusiastic, and he often conducted simulations and activities that may imbibe the learning in us.
One session, in the latter half of the course, had a case that dealt with a certain Toy Making company. The crux of the case was, the company used to make plastic toys and there were incidents reported that children have unknowingly tried to swallow the toys and choked on it, resulting in unfortunate deaths of some. Now, the top management needed to decide on the action plans. Our instructor chose volunteers to don the hat of the management leaders of the company and made them sit in the centre of the classroom, thus making it look like a board meeting. They started the discussion, and we were avid listeners in the garb of shareholders. Suddenly, the classroom door was banged open, and a group of people entered, clad in white dresses, ‘tilak’ in the forehead, posters in hand, shouting slogans. They identified themselves as the relatives of one of the dead children. They were completely unfamiliar to us, and we were pretty amazed and shocked at this rapid escalation of events. One woman clad in saree was also there in the group, who was identified as the mother of the child and she actually started crying. There was utter chaos, and our fellow mates, who were volunteers for the case study, got completely dumbfounded. There was a serious exchange of words turning into heated arguments, and the situation got pretty heated. This going on for a good 15-20 minutes, our instructor intervened and the outsider group left. After they left, we only realized that we actually started to think about the real implications of what could have happened and what actually happens in organizations in practical cases. The case was concluded, the group came back and the instructor introduced them as members of a drama society from Bhopal, who have come just to make the simulation believable. It was really amazing to see that our instructors have organized this entire thing just to conduct a classroom discussion. It has been by far the most memorable experience in a classroom in IIM Indore.
