Introduction

When it comes to pursuing an MBA, the application process and interview can be both exciting and nerve-wracking. In this article, I will share my personal experience applying to BITSoM (BITS School of Management) and provide insights into the interview process. By sharing my journey, I hope to offer guidance and inspiration to future MBA applicants.

Background

In 2020, I took the GMAT examination and subsequently sought out business schools that fulfilled two specific criteria I prioritized: a diverse student body and a  contemporary curriculum. Due to the onset of the Covid pandemic, and my personal preference for in-person learning rather than an online format, I made the decision to enroll in a business school in 2023. In my search for suitable options within the
country, I carefully considered the Indian School of Business (ISB) and the Birla Institute of Technology and School of Management (BITSoM). Following my waitlisting in Round 1 and subsequent rejection from ISB, I came to view the situation as a fortuitous turn of events when BITSoM emerged as a perfect opportunity that fulfilled my primary criteria for a business school. During the application process for BITSoM, I possessed a cumulative work experience of little more than four years, comprising 2.5 years or more in Business Development within the Edtech and importing industry, and an additional 1.5 years as an analyst at a healthcare consulting firm.

Discovering BITSoM

My journey with BITSoM began when I learned about it through a peer from my undergraduate ( BITS, Goa) who did an extensive research in the MBA college domain for both domestic and international B-schools. Intrigued, I explored the program further and was impressed by what they offered. The faculty from renowned universities, Winning at the Workplace courses, and the London Business School Immersion Program caught my attention. I connected with students from BITSoM on LinkedIn, who spoke highly of the comprehensive curriculum and diverse peer group. Convinced by the positive feedback, I decided to apply to BITSoM.

The Application Process

As part of the application, I was required to write essays that allowed me to reflect on my aspirations and experiences. In the first essay, I delved into my career goals, emphasizing my desire to become a global business leader. The second essay required me to share details of my achievement. I chose to discuss my achievement in customer relationship in my previous organization resulting in a 4.9/5 Star customer rating (140+ reviews).

The Interview Experience

Few weeks after submitting my application, I received an invitation for an interview with BITSoM. The interview took place online via Zoom and involved two panellists: a member of the admissions team and an alumnus of BITS Pilani, who has an entrepreneur venture. I was quick to develop rapport with each of the panelists as the admission team member from BITSoM shared the same name as my mother and the
BITS alumni and I have the same alma mater. From the outset, they assured me that the interview would be a conversation aimed at understanding my fit for their B-School.

During the interview, the panelists asked me a range of questions to assess my motivations, aspirations, and experiences. They inquired about my decision to pursue an MBA after 4 years of work experience. I explained my passion for networking and the fact that my learnings had plateaued in my current organization. The panelists were genuinely interested in my background, my goals, motivation and asked relevant questions regarding my experience. I was well prepared for all of the questions regarding my experience and used SAR (Situation Action Result) to answer them in a concise and easy to understand manner. They also explored my extracurricular activities, especially my experience as part of the Football team in BITS Goa. Extracurricular are closely knitted with leadership potential and I ensured that I put my best foot forward while answering the questions. Throughout the interview, I emphasized my genuine passion, willingness to learn, and adaptability. When faced with questions challenging my decisions, I carefully considered their suggestions while staying true to my aspirations.

The Outcome

After a conversational and self-reflective interview experience lasting 35 minutes, I received the exciting news that I had been accepted into BITSoM. The interview not only helped me secure admission but also allowed me to gain further clarity on my goals and motivations.

Conclusion

My journey applying to BITSoM and the subsequent interview experience proved to be a valuable opportunity for self-discovery. The application process enabled me to articulate my aspirations and envision my future path. The interview provided a platform for insightful conversations that helped me refine my goals and showcase my potential To future MBA applicants, I encourage you to thoroughly research your target schools, seek guidance from current students, and prepare for both the application and interview stages. Remember, the interview is not just a test of your knowledge but an opportunity to demonstrate your passion and authenticity. With determination and preparation, you too can embark on an enriching MBA journey. BITSoM, with its world-class faculty, unique teaching methodology, and prime location in Mumbai, has emerged as an exciting destination for business education. I wish all aspiring students the best of success in their MBA endeavors!
