The year was 2016 when I passed out with a B.Tech Degree in Electrical Engineering learning almost nothing that excited me. When I got selected by TCS on campus, just like my other friends without any critical introspection, I joined the IT hub. Most people hate support projects but I didn’t. So, when I got the opportunity to become the SPOC Team Lead, I grabbed it instantly. Went on with that IT job for 5 years. Life had become monotonous by then. It’s not that I had not thought about doing an MBA but it was the profiles that did not give me that level of excitement. And so, when IIT (ISM) Dhanbad launched their program of MBA in Business Analytics, I jumped in instantly, because data is something that excites me. Be it demystifying the market trends or be it forecasting the consumer sales for the next 2 years, data can tell you anything.
It was August 16, 2021, when finally the classes began and you know what the first class was? You will not believe it. It was none other than Machine Learning! Imagine learning about Linear and Logistic Regression Algorithms on the first day of your MBA Class. I was stumped. And after that, bullets came one after the other in the form of Financial Accounting, Statistics, Data Mining, Business Analytics, and Managerial Economics. So many new subjects at one go! In the first month, it was so overwhelming. But gradually all the anxiety settled down with time. We started learning everything step by step in a practical way. And you know what the best part was? Our professors. Yes, you heard that right. There were times when I felt self-doubt about whether I can make it to the end or not. But it was our professors who never lost even this much faith in us. And that is exactly what kept me going. They made sure we understand every concept to the core.
Coming to the life at DMS, IIT Dhanbad is nothing short of an eye-opening experience. Dealing with time management, assignments, and weekly tests was something that I had lost touch with in the past five years, thanks to the IT job. But when new people gathered around in the college, new friendships started to form. Through teamwork, helping each other with doubt clearance things started becoming smoother. Gradually Data Mining and Managerial Economics became my favorite subjects. MBA finally started becoming meaningful to me. And with the advent of Web 3.0, an MBA in Business Analytics is becoming more and more essential with time. Nevertheless, other domains like Finance, Operations, and Marketing also started making sense to me. I started learning how to decode the financial statements of multinational companies, how to break the supply chain into various components for efficiency optimization, and how to design marketing campaigns that can enable a product to reach out to millions. And all this in such a short period.
And you know what I haven’t even come to the best part of the entire MBA program at DMS, IIT Dhanbad. Do you want to know what it is? Well, it’s the ROI that will spin your head around. An MBA under just 4 Lakhs. Can you simply imagine that! And add to that the prestigious tag of IIT (ISM) Dhanbad. I can’t think of a better combination than that to speak the truth.
Currently, I am the coordinator of the Consulting Club at DMS, IIT Dhanbad. Every week we hold special sessions on Case Study and Guesstimate Solving, Skill-Based Training, and Guest Lectures. Along with that, we organize brainstorming sessions on new-age technology and current market trends. It’s not just theoretical studies that we focus on, it’s the practical side of it that we try to learn here.
