Today we have with us Anupam Sharma, an IIM Bangalore Alumnus. Anupam joined the Aditya Birla Group in June 2018 and has recently completed her first year with the organization. She is now working with Birla Sun Life Insurance. What has your ABG journey been like so far?I was hired through the lateral campus hire process. LEAD required 487 months of minimum work experience and I had 46 so I was on-boarded through LEAP. My first stint was with Hindalco where I was working in Strategic Procurement. The second stint was part of the innovation cell, which was at the Group level. The purpose was to get an outside perspective to the Group and bring in the latest technology. My final stint was with Birla Sun Life Insurance which involved working with a new channel of direct-to-consumer and trying to create partnerships that can be used to grow this new channel. After this, my mandatory CSR stint was at one of the manufacturing plants to understand how our work affects communities and people in the vicinity. The role finally offered to me with Birla Sun life insurance was an extension of my final stint wherein I manage digital alliances for the business. Why ABG?I am a core engineer who used to work with the R&D function in my previous organization. At IIM Bangalore, I got exposure to the business end of things, specifically in the areas of strategy and operations, which is the space in which I wanted to work. However, since that was theoretical in nature, ABG’s program gave me an opportunity to understand what kind of roles I would actually want to work in. In fact, my first stint with Hindalco was in strategy, which was the actual practical version of what I was studying at B-School.What according to you differentiates ABGLP from other General Management Programs? One thing that I think is a differentiator is the community outlook that exists within ABGLP. There are about 300-350 managers within the Company. The fact that this is a very small group of people in a relatively large organization and along with that, the prestige associated with the program, leads to a relatively close network within ABGLP managers. Periodic summits are carried out to keep them connected and engaged with each other. In such events, there are some senior Group Management Program (GMP) members also present, which generally leads to more visibility by the business leaders for the managers. How did your final role after the first year get decided? The process is actually similar to recruitment through the summer internship process. Working under different stints, other managers may find a good fit in you which increases the idea of working there as well, leading you to join that team at the end of one year. Equally, if not of the three stints work for you, you can apply to the various opportunities presented at the time and may get to join any of those opportunities. What about after you’ve taken up a role? Is it feasible to shift to another role? There are a lot of opportunities to move around the Group. In fact, one of the main employment benefits that ABG drives is its value proposition which it terms as “A World of Opportunities”. For example, my manager started with the group at Grasim Industries after which he moved to Vodafone Idea and now currently, he is associated with Aditya Birla Capital’s Insurance division.A World of Opportunities indeed!
