“Mentoring is a brain to pick, an ear to listen, and a push in the right direction.”
-John C. Crosby

A well-designed and thought-provoking definition of what mentoring is. In today’s competitive scenario, a student needs an amalgamation of academic knowledge and requisite skills to foray into the dynamic corporate world. It is an arduous task to get a diverse set of students polished and ready to be future managers and leaders in a short span of two years.

The pandemic has disrupted many sectors, with the most significant impact falling on the education sector. Earlier in an offline mode, students could reach out to faculties, take guidance from seniors, and collaborate with peers. The online medium of instruction has created virtual walls around, forcing students to adapt, connect and learn from their homes, with limited to no exposure to the world of a B School. The significant impact on different sectors has left the students feeling directionless and with not many people to guide them. An essential part of any academic learning is the non-classroom and peer learning which students get from their seniors as well as their peers. MBA/PGDM is a course aimed to provide real-life business simulations and therefore, must prepare students as best as can for their careers post-graduation.

Most students join a B-school to become successful leaders, and it is believed that “All great leaders need great mentors”.

Keeping this thought in mind, the Alumni Relationship Committee (ARC) of the Institute of Management Technology (IMT), Ghaziabad, introduced a flagship Mentorship Programme and brought the students of the 2022 Batch an amazing opportunity to connect with the rich alumni base of the college. After several rounds of discussions and inputs from eminent alumni, college administration, and committee members, the programme was designed with a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) which laid out the roadmap, guidelines, and frameworks to make it a successful programme. The programme takes into account the present scenario of the industry, the current state of the mentee, and the dynamic skills that the corporate world demands. The mentorship programme is designed to provide current students with valuable guidance beyond the teachings of classrooms to develop them as thorough professionals and help groom these young leaders.

Today, the meaning of the word “mentor” has evolved to mean a savvy advisor, wise person, a trusted buddy, and excellent teacher. For IMT Ghaziabad, there is no dearth of such mentors. IMT Ghaziabad has a rich base of more than 30,000 alumni across the world, with thousands of them holding CXO-level positions today. The committee reaches out to the esteemed alumni to volunteer their time and to share their vast and diverse experience of their Industry with a carefully selected batch of mentees. The mission of this programme is to mentor, not just the current Batch but also to help boost the learning of the future batches as well. The vision of this programme is to create a long-lasting bond between the mentor and mentee which helps the mentee to become a better leader in the future.

From this programme, the mentees will get valuable knowledge & insights regarding the industry, career guidance, self-branding techniques, the opportunity to expand their professional network, and suggestions on how they can develop. They will also get a good learning opportunity to hear their mentors' perspective and learn from their experiences and mistakes. The Alumni Relationship Committee introduced the first phase of this programme in February 2021. Due to popular demand, it is finalizing the Second Phase, which shall roll out soon.
