Human Resources has always fascinated me, so much to the extent that I decided to let go of a career that I was settling down to. I had been a software engineer for over three years and though it was not something that fascinated me, I was slowly and steadily approaching a position in my life where I started to feel satisfied with it. Though with all this, there was still one question that remained unanswered “Will I be content to do this work even after 15-20 years”. I never wanted to be in a position in my life where I am left with nothing else but to just live the rest of my life with discontent and the feeling of not having tried something to change for the better. Thus I am here pursuing my masters at NMIMS, Bangalore. I was clear from the very start that I would want to pursue a masters in Human Resources only. This very thought has stayed alive and become stronger day by day. There is something about people management that has always fascinated me. I believe that every person is very unique in his or her own way and it is always a challenge to decode them. The baby steps towards the goal started with the HR subjects in the first year, which involved Organisational Behaviour and Human Resource Management. It gave the theoretical knowledge needed to be imbibed en course. Every other subject, be it related to finance, marketing and strategy have always supported building the bigger picture of the organization. Though all the knowledge gained in the classroom made sense with what I have witnessed during my work tenure, there is a whole different level of learning exposure when the same is executed practically. This is where the summer internship was an opportunity to gain practical exposure. The preparation for summer internship were pretty straightforward. Study the concepts, build clarity and develop thoughts to implement them. With these, I was selected to do my summer internship with Tube Investments of India Ltd. I was involved in two projects during my internship. The first one involved, being a part of the High-Performance Work Culture Interventions initiatives at TI India. I was assisting a very senior professional at the organization, who was kind enough to let me understand the big picture behind this initiative. Assisting in this project helped me understand the organizational level thought process and implementations, and also as to how it is communicated to the levels below. The second project involved HR-Analytics in trying to understand the impact of manpower cost in an engineering company. Again, it gave me an understanding of how the top management looks at the component of manpower cost apart from the production cost, machinery cost, so on and so forth. The learning from these two projects have stimulated my thought process and have equipped me with important learnings to move forward. This learning will definitely help me have an upper hand in terms of my understanding of the subject and will provide a base for me to build on it. My mentors at the organization guided me throughout the internship period and provided me with valuable insights about the Human Resources Department that will surely stay on with me forever.
