Adidas is a company that designs and manufactures shoes, clothing and accessories, and is headquartered in Herzogenaurach, Germany. The company strives to be the global leader in the sporting goods industry with brands built on a passion for sports and a sporting lifestyle. Adidas believes in performance, passion, integrity, and diversity.
Major Innovation:
Adidas produces over 400 million shoes per year, which is harmful to the environment. To reduce their impact on the ocean and its ecosystem, the company decided to partner with ‘Parley for the Oceans’ to help turn marine pollution into sportswear. Adidas expects to produce 11 million pairs of shoes with recycled plastic from the oceans in 2019, more than double of what it produced in 2018. Adidas uses ocean plastic to form the upper parts of its products. Each item from their Parley range is made from at least 75% of intercepted marine trash. The Parley collection meets the performance and comfort standards of the other shoes of Adidas. Recycled polyester uses less water and fewer chemicals, further helping the environment.
Future Scope:
Adidas aims to replace all virgin polyester with recycled polyester by 2024. Already, more than 40% of its products use recycled polyester. It's been used in college football, the NHL, and even the Australian Open. While this goes a long way, it does not eliminate marine pollution entirely. Adidas is also developing a 100% recyclable shoe called the Futurecraft Loop – a shoe that is made to be remade – expected to be launched in 2021. Adidas, with the help of Parley for the Oceans, has taken a big step towards a sustainable future.
