One of the biggest concerns that a mother has when her child moves outside of home is how is the food going to be managed. Moving to Gurugram for an MBA, it was my first time in northern India and my mother being the person she was got over concerned about how will I be managing my meals. The added concern being a vegetarian (like most Gujaratis), the eating options are heavily limited compared to those in Gujarat.
Fortunately, the mess food isn’t the usual mess food you expect from what is provided usually in colleges. There is a balance in the nutrition and to my delight, nimbu pani is provided during both, lunch and dinner. Being no different from the usual human behavior, I soon reached a saturation to the fixed menu, limited options mess food. If you are from MDI, you cannot miss out on the very famous ‘Sharma’s’. Sharma’s is in a way the heritage of MDI as it has been here for decades. The place is a small arrangement with a calm, open ambience setup in between the trees. It is a popular get-together point where you can find students discussing assignments, friends having a timeout from the continuous buzz on campus as well as couples having their time together.
Coming to the services that Sharma’s provides, it has different menu for different times of the day comprising of items in categories that caters to taste of everyone. Followed by that, the food quality is better than the best of places you would have visited. The staff ensures that the inventory is fresh and one of the good practices it follows is not carrying forward the left over inventory to the next day. The eatery has very high brand value for students on campus as well as visitors. Despite quality assurance and quick service, the charges of food items are at very nominal rates (I mean, who provides a well-stuffed aloo paratha at ₹ 20!).
