A placement report can tell you a lot of stories only if you read it right! The image below is a screenshot from the placement report of one of the major B-schools and it mentions that companies such as McKinsey and Bain hire from the college. I can assure you that it is not the case (at least not the front office) and this is not just with one B-school but there are many such instances. Placement reports hold the key to understanding the opportunities and trends in the job market. Here's a comprehensive guide to help you navigate through the numbers and extract valuable insights from these reports! 1️⃣ Salary Figures: When analyzing salary data, focus on the median or mean figures. These typically represent the CTC (Cost to Company) and include components like fixed salary, variable pay, joining bonus, and ESOPs (Employee Stock Ownership Plans). Remember, a rough estimate is that around 60-80% of the CTC constitutes the cash component, providing you with a clearer understanding of the earning potential. 2️⃣ Recruiting Companies: Take note of the companies that visit the campus for placements. If you aspire to work for top-tier organizations such as MBB (McKinsey, BCG, Bain), JPMC, GS, P&G, HUL, Microsoft, etc., it's important to know that they may primarily target colleges in the top 10 rankings. Focusing on these colleges can enhance your chances of securing opportunities with these coveted employers. 3️⃣ Roles Offered: While companies may visit the campus, it's essential to delve deeper into the roles they offer. In some cases, top companies may recruit for backend positions or mid/back office functions in colleges outside the top 10. Ensure that the roles align with your career aspirations and match your desired trajectory. 4️⃣ Number of Offers: Evaluating the total number of offers in relation to the student ratio can provide insights into the competitive landscape. Additionally, consider how many offers your dream company extends. This will help you gauge the level of competition and your chances of securing your desired role. Ideally, you should refer to audited reports for accurate and reliable data. However, it's important to note that currently, only a few top B-schools, such as the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad and XLRI Jamshedpur, release audited reports. I hope this trend continues with more colleges embracing transparency and following suit. In most of the cases, all the desired details will not be available in the report and I encourage you to conduct thorough research and reach out to alumni for additional information. Their insights can provide valuable perspectives and help you make informed decisions.   Recommended Watch → How B-Schools Manipulate Placement Reports | Reality of IIM Placements Revealed Compare Top B-Schools Based On Batch Profile, Placements, and Rankings!
