It was the summer of 2013 when I first noticed an Aditya Birla Group advertisement on TV. Little did I know of the significance of such aesthetic and dramatic advertisement, which appealed to a number of lives they are touching and number of sectors they have forayed into. The advertisement showed people from different nationalities playing the same symphony with their respective unique instruments amidst beautiful landscapes.
Today, I cannot help but wonder how many components did they capture in just a minute long commercial: the way ABG is operating in 34 countries, with over 120,000 unique employees playing their own tune in sync with the composition of Aditya Birla Group – a tune which resonates with over a million people in small yet significant ways, almost every day. The group has established its uniqueness and leadership by venturing into environment friendly clothing line with brands like Pantaloons, Ted Baker, Van Heusen, Peter England, Van Heusen and my personal favorite – People. Aditya Birla Group has also maintained its stand with sustainability and development through Hindalco – which recycles 65 billion cans every year, UltraTech cement which is used for construction of all the major roadways and Birla Carbon, which makes driving on those roads safe.
Aditya Birla Capital is making thousands of people financially secure and providing financial solutions. At the same time, Aditya Birla Group is also bringing people and businesses together by providing reliable and trustworthy telecom services – Vodafone Idea. It is significant and awe-inspiring in more ways than one as to how one conglomerate can touch so many different aspects of hundreds of thousands of lives.
Part B –
Coming from a background in Dentistry, pursuing a career in Management was not a natural choice for me. However, what I dreamt of was impacting lives and making them better. In order to pursue this dream, I took initiatives in order to spread cancer awareness and discourage early users of tobacco. For the same cause, I visited several government hospitals and NGOs who are dedicated to the cause and gained an understanding from them. I talked to a number of students whom the society considers underprivileged. I understood their perspective on life, and identified the ways their life could be impacted and improved. However, throughout this process, I always concluded mismanagement and lack of funds as the root cause for various initiatives and programs not reaching the target groups. This experience encouraged me to learn various aspects of management.
Still, self-learning did not sufficiently serve my purpose, nor it was convincing for the prospective clients, which eventually led me to pursue a formal degree in management from one of the premium B-schools of India – GIM. This journey was not an easy one. I constantly had to juggle with my dental practice in order to earn money, my anti-tobacco initiatives and of course, the preparation for CAT. But as they say, “where there is a will, there is a way”, I landed at GIM and it has been a wholesome journey so far. I know my challenges are not over yet and I am not where I want to be. But for now, I am taking one step at a time.
