You start off with a dream, ‘I will be a business leader in the years to come’. With hopes of a bright future and anxiety of the fierce competition you will face, to sit among the top talent of the country, you set yourself on a path of dedicated preparation. Your efforts bear fruit and suddenly all around you starts to change. Friends and family, happy and excited, start several rounds of discussions on how hardworking, passionate and intelligent you are.
Buckling under the temptation of basking under the newly found glory, you slow down for a breather to appreciate what you have accomplished. Appreciation concedes to pride, which vacates its chair for a pinch of arrogance. So a few days before you belt up for the roller coaster ride of your life, you are full of yourself in your mind.
Among the many things you pack for your two-year-long journey, you also pack a sense of entitlement with you, which comes in various sizes. Its larger for some than the others, but almost everyone brings it with them, a fact nobody can refute. So here you find yourself again with hope in your eyes, the sheer joy of finally being there where you wanted to be, in your heart and many aspirations in mind. It’s your first day and you meet people in campus, who are no different than you. They are as elated as you are and as anxious as you are.
The orientation week gives you a peek into the life at campus and an idea about what to expect and how to prepare for what you don’t expect. With each hand raised for an answer to a question you don’t know, your arrogance shrinks back to the size it was during your examination preparation days. You look around you and the friends who were on a similar boat as yours yesterday, are suddenly riding a swanky yacht. Surprisingly, all of them have one, but you.
Your friends who have spent an year more than you at campus, take you through a long list of tasks you have to accomplish before your time runs out. You have to carry all the essential supplies on your boat and see that you make it through to the other end of the shore. The task is daunting. You fear failure. You know you will have several guides on your way to the other end, but you are skeptical. Taking a long breath, you get started. The aim is to keep shorter milestones and keep going, with a steady and consistent pace. You know you will be there, if only you remember to keep rowing and keep growing.
The journey is long and arduous and exhausting, but on the other end of the shore is a beautiful island, reachable only to those who believe they can reach it, one small step at a time.
