Summer Internships in a B-School is one such landmark about which you start building expectations even before you join a Business School. It is as if everything in the first year is preparing us for this one big battle. It is the big picture which we are made to see whenever we find any assignment not relevant or any herculean challenge to face, as a result of which the expectations which an intern has from the company increases manifold. And most of the organization fall short of what is expected by an intern as a utopian internship. I was fortunate enough to intern at a place where looking in retrospection I feel I really never thought I could have done so much in a span of 2 months.
My summer internship was at Reliance Industries Limited in Central of Excellence (COE) Accounts. I was one of the 10 finance interns chosen from various campuses. Being a fresher, I was not able to comprehend in my mind the parameters on which my performance will be judged. But I was fortunate enough to get in contact with the various alumni of JBIMS who were already working in the organization. Soon we were given the project charters and I was ready to deliver way beyond this project charter.
On 2
nd April, 2018 we were asked to report to Reliance Corporate Park for our induction activities. I must say that it has been one of the best boarding experiences I have experienced to date. Everything was so thought out and everything was disclosed to us right at the moment when we were ready to grasp the magnitude of it. Reliance has a grandeur which can be compared to no other organization. The magnitude of the organization will leave you spellbound.
I was given the responsibility to work on the Annual Report of Reliance Industries for the FY2018. It was something which was beyond my thought process as to how , as an outsider, I will be able to contribute to the most comprehensive reporting of a company where you need to know the inside out of an organization. But as cards unfolded, I was lucky to be a part of a team that gave me the utmost freedom and respect to think outside of the box and bring fresh perspectives to the entire activity. I realized how everything adds up, how big an organization Reliance is. What general perspective an outsider has is just a tip of an iceberg. Reliance is not just a company. It is a vision of a man who dared to look into the eyes of adversity. It is such a proud feeling and inspirational on so many level that there is an organization which is made in India and has achieved so much in 40 years. To me, Mr Dhirubhai Ambani will always be the greatest Entrepreneur in the world.
Key Highlights
- Jamnagar Trip: When you actually get to travel in a private jet before turning 25 then you know you must be doing something right with your life. The Largest Refinery in the world is a place beyond imagination. Here you understand the resilience of this organization. A company which is benchmarking against the best global standards and still leading the curve of growth and beating organizations as old as 180 years.
- Email of Appreciation from Mr Mukesh Ambani: There are certain moments which last with you for the rest of your life. When you see a new email has come in your outbox and it is from none other than the chairperson, the richest man in the nation, you will most probably just run out of reactions. At the same time, you will appreciate his involvement in the day to day events of the organization. You learn leadership lessons which no book can ever encapsulate.
- Meeting Top Leaders: Apart from the coffee conferences organized by the aspirant relation team, I was fortunate to meet top heads of various verticals of the organization. This exposure was provided as I was with a team that was coordinating with everyone in the organization to ensure that the ultimate delivery of Annual report is done on time. Every time you meet a person who have made big in life you realize that there are some common principles, some common ethos which each and every successful people has. When you notice things in great detail, it enhances your perception and you become a better version of yourself as you push yourself based on these lines.
You know you have given your best when you beat/confuse technology. I was putting 100 hours week in such a way that ESS portal was unable to keep a track of my check-in as well as check out timings as there would just be a difference of few hours between both. There are many tangible contributions I made in the entire process, was appreciated by one and all. Learnt so many people management lessons, could let go of so many misconceptions. In short, this journey has made me proud and humble at the same time. And when you work in Reliance, one thing that happens to your personality is that your definition of limits will be redefined. You will realize what can be possibly achieved, time is just a psychological dilemma and once you put your mind to something anything can be achieved.
