Aditya Birla Group has always been one fascinating global conglomerate which gives importance to environmental sustainability along with their corporate goals. It was sometime back that my sister and I came across Liva during shopping. Apart from the stylish and smooth fabric they offered, the salesperson explained to us about how eco-friendly the fabric was. We objected to the idea in light of our knowledge on cotton which has widely been in use for a very long time. However, the salesperson told us that Liva is made using fibers from the wood pulp of trees that are grown explicitly for this purpose. Another exciting fact was that these trees occupy less land and consume less water compared to cotton. Interested in the idea, I researched what we came to know of Liva products, once home. I was amused by the idea of giving back more than what is taken and Viscose Staple Fibre was just one thoughtful innovation that aided this motive. My sister was also encouraged to purchase Liva after we got to know about the advantages to the environment that came alongside with the trendy designs. In fact, this is just the tip of the iceberg and ABG’s efforts towards sustainability are much deeper than just this innovation. The contribution of Ultra Tech towards energy conservation and water saving and the sustainable operational excellence strategy of Birla Carbon are few of the examples. At this point where environment and thereby mankind is largely being subjected to the threats about the future, it’s highly inspirational that ABG never compromises on this aspect but instead upholds innovation to support the same. It’s not a corporate story we get to hear every day, cheers to the team.
During my third year of engineering, I intended to organize a maintenance program at the local government hospital, as part of our annual departmental fest. I tried to explain to my friends this idea of taking up the maintenance of the worn-down equipment at the hospital. They were sceptical saying that it was going to take up a lot of our time and would also cost us some money. I tried to convince them that this venture was something that we as socially responsible engineering students could contribute towards. I also organized a discussion with some of our teachers and seniors in which I shared my worries about the financial aspects and the extent of success this could have. Our teachers were supportive of this idea and assured me that the alumni association would be able to help with the funds. Our seniors guided me to start by visiting the hospital to take a rough estimate of the activities that we could undertake. These points were then discussed with my friends, who expressed confidence and were ready to support. We formed a team including seniors and teachers and visited the hospital for the initial estimation of activities that we could undertake with the fund that we were able to gather from our alumni association and a few generous sponsors. We further discussed internally and finalized our plan and presented the same to the hospital superintendent who appreciated and encouraged our intention to help and assisted us in this venture throughout. This experience brought to us the joy of working as a team for a selfless cause and it was all worth the struggles we faced.
