Choosing the right stream for engineering was of critical importance for me. Computer engineers earn more, Mechanical is evergreen and similar feedback for all other streams. I couldn’t have been more confused. The CAP form on the Directorate of technical education website had a deadline and my time was running out. My father was away for work at that point, I simply could not decide how to make my choice.
It was at this point that I saw my mobile phone. Before I could take the phone to call my dad I saw it started vibrating. It is only in retrospect that I can weigh the real importance of the call that day. My father did not tell me which department to choose he however mentioned a fact that made my choice very clear. He told me that day that the largest import that India does for foreign products is Crude oil from middle east and Electronics from Taiwan, China and America. Up asking why are we not able to make it in India to which he replied it’s because we simply lag in technology and expertise. And also the setup costs for such businesses is extremely high.
It was only later that I realized that the place where my father had called me from had only Idea coverage in the area. Had it not been for Idea. I would not have selected Electronics and more probably than not ended up in a cubicle coding for someone else. Truely what an Idea sirji!
