When I was a kid everything around me seemed to be from the Tatas but soon that notion changed. Most of the Tata products are for businesses. The products that we generally use are owned by other companies which we value less.
I was awestruck when I discovered that Vanheusen, LP, Allen Solly and Peter England were owned by a single company that too of Indian origin. I always thought these were foreign brands. This was the time when I started looking at the volume of business operated by Aditya Birla Group. Being the world’s largest producer of viscose staple fibre, it is no wonder that ABG owns some of the main brands in the textile industry.
My father always insisted on purchasing Ultratech cement for the construction of our house because he knew it was the same cement brand used for the construction of bridges and offices. He chose Hindalco aluminium sheets when it came to roofing over other players, even though it charged a premium price for the quality. Hence to me, ABG meant no compromise in quality.
It was Idea cellular services that caught our attention the most. With their TVC and hoardings, "what an idea sirji" became a common phrase among Indians. After the recent merger, Vodafone Idea is the biggest phone company by subscribers.
ABG is the world’s largest producer of carbon black which is used as a reinforcing filler in tires and other rubber products. It also finds use as a colour pigment in plastics, paints and inks. Hence it can be easily said that the more we notice the more we realize ABG’s presence in it.
We all face challenges in our day to day life. Even ABG has faced many challenges. They will be facing challenges even now at this level of success. All challenges in life are meant to be conquered and most of them have a lesson for us in it. Overcoming any challenge is easy, if we follow this golden rule, ie, focus on our abilities rather than keeping eye on the challenge and worrying.
Only people who have failed have achieved something in life. I have faced many failures in my life too. One such failure happened when I was in school. We were first introduced to computers in class 7. Back then I was just an average student in computer science and I failed in the first term exam. That was the first time that I failed for a subject and it embarrassed me more to see that it was the easiest subject in the lot for other students. From then on I started loving the subject. With love you can conquer anything in this world and only when you love something would you invest time for it. I learnt the subject with more enthusiasm and was able to better my marks in the upcoming exams. After matriculation, I chose computer science stream and was the school topper for Computer Science in the class 12 exam. Guess what? I chose Computer Science as my graduation discipline for engineering too and graduated from NIT Calicut with B.Tech in Computer Science. It's not the challenge, but the way you face it that defines you.
