One would not expect to have a memorable classroom experience in less than 30 days of being here. But I guess that says enough of the B-school I’ve joined. It was our fourth session of ‘Communication Skills for Managers’, Prof. Sumitra Balakrishnan had something unique planned for us.
It was a treasure hunt. We were divided into groups of 8 and given a list of things we needed to secure. There were various constraints, one being that only one person from a group could leave the class at a time. We reached a point where we had only two more items to procure, a half-filled bottle and a green marker. I was asked to obtain the two items. The half-filled bottle was an easy task, but finding a green marker proved to be quite cumbersome as it was not available in the stationery shop in campus and the other groups were smart enough to take the markers from the adjacent classrooms.
I decided to scavenge for the marker from the classes on the upper floors. To my luck, I was able to find a green marker in the second class I visited. There was a rush of adrenaline and I just ran down with all I had, alas I managed to slip and twist my ankle. It was quite painful and I wanted to visit the campus nurse immediately. But I gave it a ‘no’ and ran to my classroom on one leg and gave my group the two items I found.
I was in immense pain and couldn’t focus on anything, but it turned out we were the first ones to secure all the items in the list and when our group was announced as the winners of the treasure hunt, I forgot all about the pain and started celebrating crazy with my group mates to the amusement of my other classmates. Even though it was just a treasure hunt, it was more than a treasure hunt. We learned the importance of effective communication, planning, staffing and various other HR related concepts.
