Orientation program at IIFT was an unprecedented event in my life. The program was designed such that new joiners come out of their comfort zone and explore new avenues b-school has to offer. One of the competitions during the program that made an everlasting impact on me was “
Construction of high payload bearing bridge.” For the competition, we were supposed to build a bridge with the help of six newspapers and Sellotape in a team of seven people within an hour.
As this was the second day of our college, we were strangers but shared the same sense of ambition and gratitude towards the institution. When we started working on the problem statement, we came to know the power of diversity in our batch. Discussion of different ideas made us realize that we could see this particular problem from these many angles. When we built the bridge, we thought it was neither beautiful nor that it could withstand high payload. As the examination of the bridge started, we feared our scepticism would transform into reality.
When we saw that our bridge could handle the weight of the first book, we were happy. Then as seniors started increasing the load on the bridge, we were amazed by the capacity of the bridge. This process went on until they ran out of load to add on the bridge. We could not believe what had just happened. We had reservations about the bridge but there it was standing with the entire burden. That made me think, “
Do we really know the true potential of our actions?”
I sometimes think that we are caught up in finding a rationale for not doing things instead of just putting in the actual work required. We spend so much time thinking about what the end result will be instead of working to achieve the desired outcome. In addition, the main learning from the activity was that we do not know what we can achieve until we put in our best efforts and the only way to reach our true potential is to push ourselves and to refuse to settle.

“Fashion is the armour to survive the reality of everyday life.”
- Bill Cunningham
I believe fashion plays an important role in our day-to-day life as clothing styles make people more confident. I think we can make a difference in people’s life if we are able to provide them with clothing items in which they feel comfortable and confident. During my job in Future Supply Chain Solutions Ltd., I was part of a team, which managed the supply chain for one of the apparel business of Future Group. It gave me major insights about how the apparel industry works across channels. Hence, I would like to work in one of the division under
Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail Ltd., as it will provide me an opportunity to dive into the world of retail business.
