The Vinod Gupta School of Management, IIT Kharagpur gains international acclaim with the stellar performance of its students at the Stock-Trak Global Portfolio Simulation Competition organized by SMU Singapore. The team comprising of Madhav Krishna, Nishant Kumar, and Suraj Bhandare, students of the MBA program, and Anusha Rao and Arkajeet Santra, students of the EMBA program, secured the Runner-up position for coming out with the best-managed portfolio.
The event sponsored by City-SMU Financial Literacy Program for Young Adults had 50 teams from all over the globe participate in the portfolio optimization exercise which ran for 6 weeks from 7th Oct 2019 till 15th Nov 2019. The teams had to trade in the stocks listed on NYSE on Stock-Trak virtual trading platform, which is used by academic institutions, corporates and finance professionals across the globe to trade in equities, bonds, options, futures, commodities and more.
The team from VGSoM managed to deliver a return of 7.51% in just 6 weeks, missing the top position by a whisker. Prof. Prabina Rajib from VGSoM, IIT Kharagpur and Prof. Aurobindo Ghosh from SMU, Singapore were instrumental in guiding the students throughout the course of the competition on various topics like the construction of portfolios and advanced portfolio management skills.
The competition tested the students on their skill with managing a healthy portfolio and comprehension of the latest developments in financial markets. The students were constantly on their feet, juggling academics and trading, even at odd hours during the night in keeping with the New York time-zone.
A total of five teams consisting of 25 students from VGSoM, IIT Kharagpur participated in the event as part of the Inclusive and Immersive Experiential Learning (I2XL) Project in Advanced Portfolio Management by Singapore Management University. The award is a testament to the financial acumen of students and knowledge imparted by faculties positioning VGSoM as one of the top institutes in the field of Finance.
