“What is Time?” asked the Prof. Dinesh Panchal in his first class of Statistics.
The entire class was figuring out if the question asked by the professor is an abstract one or some were looking for a connection between Time and Statistics. The hand of a fan of the movie Interstellar raised to say that Time is the 4 th Dimension. While I was wrapping my head around this concept of the existence of 4th Dimension the professor drew out an observation of a common human behaviour. Human always has an urge to know their future and what does future have in store for them, they would be willing to give up anything even for a snippet of future. Prediction of future thus was an important fantasy of human behaviour, which was even picturised in a Bollywood science fiction movie Krrish, where a certain fictional character Rohit Mehra using his powerful mind was able to make a machine that could see the future.
Why knowing about the future is important when we need cognizance only of the future and then wish to come back to the present with the knowledge that either our future is safe or if we are in trouble? Until a time travel machine is actually built, how to quench the thirst of humans to know about their future? Here come Statistics into the picture where it just an estimation of the future using available data.
No-one in the class had thought that a Professor would be so subtle to introduce the topic of Statistics to us, where he could juggle such complex concepts and our outlook towards the subject changed.
Statistics is very important in the finance industry, where we often depend on the data to draw out inferences and statistics has contributed to growth story of companies like Aditya Birla Capital which has such a strong presence across life insurance and health insurance, asset management, equity, currency and commodity broking, personal finance management, housing finance and pension fund management businesses. The number of businesses and opportunities present for Aditya Birla Capital makes it a unique proposition for a budding management student like me.
The categories of customers that Aditya Birla Capital has ranged from corporate customers to regular personal customers highlights the opportunities one can experience as an employee and learning to deal with various types of customers. The past data of customers and markets helps in analysing the current needs of the customers and to bring about new products in the market with such a diverse portfolio. New products translate to a larger market share which in turn makes the company a leader and a role model in itself.
