With the official CAT 2020 answer keys and response sheets out, people have already started calculating their chances of getting a call from their favorite B-School. They have been as detailed as they can be in their analyses. I've even seen posts in different forums where aspirants have made elaborate charts depicting the distribution of CAT scores (from a coaching institute's list) and other variations related to it! And obviously, multiple coaching institutes have released percentile predictors depending on your score. While these are exciting and will keep you engaged during these anxious times, they do have an effect of heightening your anxiety. People expecting interview calls from select B-Schools might lose their motivation to see themselves on the lower end of the curve. Conversely, someone exceeding their expectations might get overwhelmed and start worrying a lot, affecting their preparation. The first thing I would suggest CAT 2020 candidates do is take these predictions with a pinch of salt. Ultimately, they are just predictions. No one knows what a person's CAT percentile will be unless they get all the test takers' data. Also, calls depend not only on percentile but on other factors like X/XII/UG/Workex. So, a percentile that did not fetch a call from a B-School last year might bring one this year, and vice-versa. So, asking around on forums whether a CAT score with a particular profile will fetch a call is fruitless. Some candidates might have registered for other B-Schools' entrance exams, which are yet to take place. They have to keep preparing for these as well. I know a friend of mine who had messed up during his XAT exam just because he was too worried about his "low" CAT percentile (CAT results were declared the day before XAT that year.) It has to be kept in mind that these exams offer chances to enter some of the country's best B-Schools, like XLRI. So, fretting over CAT is not a good idea if it hampers performance in these exams. Finally, we have GD/WAT-PI preparation. Throughout, I've always stressed this part the most while talking about B-School admissions. A mistake most aspirants make is waiting for the CAT results before they start preparing for GD/WAT-PI. This makes only one month available for prep since some B-Schools start the process as early as February. B-School interviews are unpredictable and require a broad knowledge of various things to boost your confidence during the interview. GD/WAT, on the other hand, can have topics ranging from current affairs to abstract ones. So, if someone does not have a habit of writing articles or blogs, these skills also need to be brushed up. So, in my opinion, one should start preparation now, instead of waiting for the CAT results. Even if you don't get a single call, your knowledge about various topics and confidence increases. Finally, most aspirants usually have a job at hand. They need to keep in mind that they need to keep working if they don't get into any B-School this year. So, performing well in that job is also essential. Learn to balance all these things, and you're prepared for MBA life better than most people!
