I joined Hindalco Industries Limited as a graduate engineer trainee in July, 2016. For the first six months, I underwent training in Hindalco, Renukoot. I was assigned the fabrication unit over there. On the completion of my training, I joined at Hindalco, Hirakud FRP in January, 2017. In the initial few days I had the challenge of the application of theoretical knowledge that I had on to the practical aspect of aluminium rolling. I had to understand the working of all the machines in our plant in order to work and give a valuable contribution.
But the biggest challenge that I overcame in my life to achieve my ambition was to independently run the Danielli Slitter machine which is mainly used to produce the foil stock and the closure stock. Back in November, 2017 the MD of Hindalco Industries Limited, Mr Satish Pai visited Hirakud FRP. At that time he interacted with us, the young manufacturing professionals. He discussed with us about various topics and any issues that we faced at our workplace. At that time he asked us if anyone of the management category individual could independently run the machines. This was because the management was completely dependent on the ITI workers in order to run the machine. Even the situation was a bit fragile as the labour laws in India was highly skewed towards the workers and the group of ITI people always used to demand from the management or threaten to go on strike. So he asked us to individually learn to operate the machines so that our dependency on the ITI staff would be greatly reduced. This also would help us to know the machines thoroughly and help in any case of troubleshooting eventually making a machine expert. Having said this, here comes the most important challenge. Only the ITI staff in our plant knew how to run the slitter machine. Initially they were reluctant and hesitant to impart their knowledge and skills since they thought that if we could run it independently, they would lose their bargaining power. But over the course of time and with the help of healthy interaction with them on regular basis, I gained their support and they helped me to learn the machine. Contributed significantly with them and especially during the night shifts since the night shifts are pretty difficult to handle. Also made a record of maximum production of coils during night shift. In November, 2018 there was a strike called out by the lawyers in Sambalpur which resulted in no manpower during the two days of the strike. At that time I individually operated the machine for the above mentioned two days and helped in the production.
