Most of the aspirants and prospective students are unaware of the events which take place inside a b-school. A new batch of students will swarm the gates of the IIMs soon and this article mainly addresses their doubts. I will talk about the events which take place in IIM Kozhikode and who hosts these events.
P.S. I have listed only the major events, if I write about all the events which take place annually, I would have to write a book!
1. Backwaters –
Backwaters is the annual management fest of IIM Kozhikode. Usually held in October, it is the first mega event of the academic year and is celebrated rightly so. Not only students from IIM Kozhikode, but from colleges across India grace the event.
The flagship event of Backwaters is in partnership with Chennai Superkings, where the winners get a chance to interact with the CSK team. The 2018 edition saw the speaker series,
Inspirations- Look No Further for the first time ever. It had speakers like Uparna Mitra (CMO, Titan Watches and Accessories), Nilesh Hundekari (Partner, Asia Pacific, A.T.Kearney), Arvind Krishnan (MD, BBH India), Pratik Pota (CEO, Jubilant Foodworks) and Ashish Vidyarthi (Actor, motivational speaker).
The events at Backwaters range from MUNs & Youth Parliaments to case competitions and quizzes.
2. Echoes –
Echoes is the annual cultural fest of IIM Kozhikode. It is by far the grandest event of the year and attracts people from all over Kozhikode. Echoes is known to host one of the most extravagant pro-nites amongst all the B-schools. The event has been previously graced by celebrities like Farhan Akhtar, KK, Sona Mahapatra, Agnee, Neeraj Sridhar, Aditi Singh Sharma, Nikhil D'Souza and the Indian Ocean. There is also a ‘Campus Princess’ competition which takes place, where a lot of participation is seen. It was powered by FBB in 2019. This year also saw performances by Salim-Sulaiman.
3. Horizons –
This is the Annual Management Conclave organized by the Industry Interaction Cell. It has eminent and respected speakers from diverse fields speak on a plethora of issues. Some of the past speakers have been Kunal Kamra, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Tisca Chopra and Mr Sameer Soni, Director, International Business at the Times of India Group. It usually takes place in the month of January.
This year after multiple informative sessions, it ended with a fun-filled session hosted by comedian Rahul Subramanium.
4. Nostalgia -
Nostalgia is the flagship event of the Alumni Committee. It is the annual Alumni Meet - an evocative event that marks a homecoming, celebration and unparalleled joy of communion with the alma mater. Tentatively scheduled in mid-January, it is an ideal opportunity to renew old bonds, foster new ties and relive the magical moments all over again. It is attended by 100+ enthusiastic alums, all waiting to relive those old days.
The mega celebration has events like “IIMK’s got talent” and poker nights where professors, alumni and current students all come together for a night of revelry.
5. Sangram -
Sangram is the biggest sporting event of IIM Kozhikode. The 3-day event is played between IIM Bangalore, IIM Kozhikode, IIM Trichy and IIM Vizag. The winner gets the most prestigious inter-IIM sporting trophy in the South. A wide variety of sports are played including cricket, football, basketball, hockey, swimming, badminton and table-tennis. Sangram 2017 was won by IIM Kozhikode and by IIM Bangalore in 2018. The slogan of IIM Kozhikode for the 2018 event was truly inspiring – Blood. Sweat. Tears
6. Calicut marathon –
The last event of the academic year, the Calicut Marathon is definitely worth the wait. It is the first and biggest student organized marathon in the country. The Calicut Marathon is covered by major newspapers and websites like Mathrubhumi, Malayalam Manorama, The Indian Express, The Times of India, The Hindu, The Deshabhimani, Deccan Chronicle, Madhyamam and Sportskeeda. Scores of people across Kozhikode come and run the 21km event.
