Recently, our team interviewed Abeer Gupta on his internship at JP Morgan & Chase. Abeer is a second year PGDM student at IFMR. He completed his graduation in Electrical Engineering from the Government Engineering College, Bilaspur. He is a big-time foodie and a huge movie buff. Abeer is a very light-hearted and cheerful person. Our team had a wonderful time interacting with him. 1. What was the role offered to you? A: The role offered to me was of Operation Analyst. During my internship, I was assigned two projects which were related to the team. This year, JPMC had an Innovation Challenge Competition for all Operation Analyst interns. 2. How was your internship experience at JPMC? A: Overall, the internship was a great experience for me. Needless to say, JPMC has a great work culture and well-structured internship program. I enjoyed working with my team. My teammates were very enthusiastic and supportive and I had the opportunity to learn a lot from them. Innovation Challenge was a group task in which we had to find both the problem and its solution. As a part of the internship, we also had networking sessions with the senior and top management like ED’s and MD.  3. What were some of the challenges you faced during your internship? A: I faced some challenges in finding enough time to manage the Innovation Challenge, BAU (Business as Usual) and two team projects. I divided the time for BAU and Innovation Challenge. Further, I divided the projects into a few parts and set a deadline for each of them. Innovation Challenge was a group task in which a group of interns formed a small team and we had to find both the problem statement and its solution. It was quite challenging on its own, but what complicated it more was finding a convenient time for the entire team to sit together and discuss as all the interns were from different teams and had different shift timings. But we managed this by fixing a daily time for the meetings and we all informed our managers about it. 4. What were the important things you learned during the internship? A: I had the opportunity to learn a lot of technical and soft skills. I learned to operate few of the JPMC in-house tools. I also got to enhance my knowledge about banking operations. For a fresher like me, this internship was an eye-opener as it gave me the corporate exposure and a sense of how the banking industry operates.  5. What advice do you have for your juniors for their summer placements? A: It is very important to decide which industry you want to join and the kind of roles you are looking for. Then you have to make your profile relevant to that industry. Always research about the company and the role being offered before applying for it. It will be helpful to go through websites like Glassdoor in order to understand more about the role, organizational culture, and selection process. Knowledge about current affairs is very important. Spend some time to understand more about the current developments in the industry. Interviewers are interested in finding candidates whose skills sets match with their requirements. So, if you have got the skills, make sure you highlight them during your interview. Lastly, be confident and believe in yourself.  6. How did IFMR help you in getting an internship at JPMC? A: Firstly, IFMR gave me the opportunity to take part in the internship selection process for JPMC. The institute helped me build a strong foundation in finance and operations which really helped me during the interview process. The projects, presentations, and case discussions have helped me enhance my analytical skills and communication skills. The course curriculum has enabled me to go beyond textbooks to understand concepts on a deeper level. Overall, IFMR has helped me develop into a well-rounded person.  7. So, what’s next in line for you? A: Well, I got my pre-placement offer after the internship and I have accepted it. The full-time role being offered to me is Corporate Analyst Development Program. This is a two-year program in which I will be rotated in three teams each for eight months. I believe this program will give me a good exposure in a short period of time. I am very excited about it and I can’t wait to get started. INTERVIEWEE
