Industry exposure forms an important part of any MBA curriculum and mine was no different. I had a wonderful opportunity to work as an HR intern at TEGA industries limited, Kolkata. TEGA specializes in the designs of consumables required for mineral beneficiation, mining and bulk solids handling industries, the world over. As an HR intern, I was entrusted upon with the facilitation of the annual PMS process for the FY 2015-16.
My project title was “How to make PMS robust to induce a performance culture at TEGA”. Along with the regular PMS process, I have also designed a mid-year feedback mechanism, since TEGA only had an annual PMS process. The objective was to enhance employee performance through a more frequent review and also to cope up with the changing goals which were the result of the dynamic business environment within which TEGA operated. Another important responsibility was to introduce a mid-probation feedback mechanism since TEGA had the culture to either confirm or withdraw the candidature of any employee at the end of their probation period. The focus was upon to guide the new employees regarding the standards of TEGA against which their performance will be measured and also help them understand what their manager expected from them.
TEGA has a very vibrant work culture and it promotes enthusiasm among employees by providing autonomy of work till the required level. Despite the organizational hierarchy, supervisors and subordinates enjoy an equal status and work together as a team. I enjoyed the culture at TEGA since they have entrusted upon me with sensitive data and has provided me with freedom in order to complete my project, despite being an intern.
Each and every day spent at TEGA helped me to learn something new and the moments are being cherished. The late evening works to meet the deadline, the fun at work, the team outings were all my best experiences. Yet, if asked to mention only 1 thing – I would say that the HR team which I had worked with was the best. It created an extremely positive impact on me and had demonstrated that a good team can help any employee to bring out the best in him/her.
First and foremost thing which I would like to advise my juniors is to build a strong relationship and bonding with the team you are working with. This would help you to sought help from them very easily and it would help you to learn about the system faster, through interaction with them. Always keep your inquisitive mind at active mode and display that you are eager to learn and contribute. And ultimately, it is your hard work which would speak volumes about your overall performance during the internship.
