Taking India to the world! My father in 2006 asked me to accompany him after my school to a local cement store to buy UltraTech cement when our house was being constructed. That is my earliest memory of the Aditya Birla Group. From my first white Van Heusen shirt to Peter England trousers, Aditya Birla group has touched not only my life but also the lives of billions of Indians and people worldwide. Millions of children everyday eat their lunch in school, which is wrapped in Freshwrapp by their mothers, later to be used as a cricket ball with the lunchbox as their bats.
Growing up in a city like Allahabad, we didn’t have many shopping malls like other Tier-1 cities of India. I remember visiting the Pantaloon store in Vinayak City Centre, which was the second shopping mall of Allahabad. Being able to see a so many options and clothes in a store was a luxurious experience and made me feel like I was not in a small city anymore. It made me feel big. My father grew up in a village, managed to become a Cardiologist and started working in the district hospital of Allahabad. He told me our lives are going to change, and it did!
Aditya Birla Group has invested millions of dollars in India’s human capital. It runs more than 18 charitable hospitals which improves the life of living in suburban and rural parts of India. Countless lives have been saved by their initiative. With more than 19 companies outside India, Aditya Birla employees more than 120,000 people all around the world. They have realised time and again the responsibility organizations have towards the society which was evident after Aditya Birla Group donated Rs50 crore towards CM’s Relief Fund for the Fani affected areas.
When I look back at my life, I see a kid who was scared to stand out. Throughout my childhood, I feel, I was holding myself back by with my laid-back attitude. Every day during the morning prayer in my school I was reminded of the meaning of semper sursum, the motto of my school, which translates to “always aim high”. But for years I failed to realise and recognise the inherent malice of bad attitude and how it translates to the way I behave and respond to situations in life.
I was scared to admit that I had no goal in life. After years of standing in the quadrangle listening to our Principal tell us about the importance of setting a goal I graduated and started my journey as an engineering student in University of Petroleum and Energy Studies, Dehradun. I used to procrastinate my studies when I was in college but after 4 semesters, I realized how it can negatively impact my career. That is when I gradually started to turn myself around. As a direct consequence of that, I observed that my scores went up in the next 4 semesters. The challenges I faced were inside my head and it was very difficult to change my attitude and outlook on life. I did however learn how to meet deadlines as a result of my weaknesses. After overcoming my fear and internal challenges of adapting to change, I was placed in IBM India Pvt. Ltd. in the final year of engineering. Now, here I am in NMIMS, Mumbai, one of the top business schools in India.
