What makes one the Professor of the Year? Is it their way of teaching? Their connection with students? Or simply the way their mind functions, which inadvertently inspires their students? Well, whatever it be, it's always a pleasure to speak with such gifted individuals who not only possess a plethora of knowledge and skills, but are also involved in shaping future leaders. In this video, we spoke to Prof. Sanjeeb Kakoty, who emerged as InsideIIM's Professor of the Year in 2019.
From radio host to writing a journal, to filmmaking and so much more, Prof. Kakoty has a lot of feathers in his cap. He spoke to us regarding his experience as faculty in IIM Shillong and the many stories of students that have still stayed with him. In IIM Shillong, he says they do not refer to professors as teachers but as ‘facilitators', since they can only facilitate knowledge. Getting a little philosophical, he says that his job involves just throwing seeds of ideas, and letting them germinate within the students' minds.
He speaks of his involvement in the World Business Skill Council of Sustainable Business, and how sustainability isn't an ‘option', but the only way forward. He further delves into the impact of technology on human society, and how technology hasn't yet been able to let mankind explore its full potential. He talks of ‘Self and Leadership Communication', a paper that he teaches at IIM Shillong, and what questions it poses. Watch this video to know why he emerged as InsideIIM's Professor of the Year in 2019.
Key Takeaways:
1. Young people chase money. Money is always a byproduct. Do what you love, and money will come to you.
2. Sustainability isn't an option; it's the only way going forward.
3. The point of life is to live life to its fullest.
4. Technology has given people access to a lot of information. However, having information doesn't mean that you are educated.
5. Most people don't leave any mark in the sands of time.
6. Sustainability is one face of a coin. The other side is justice. Anything that is unjustified is not sustainable.
