While there's a prevailing narrative suggesting that prerequisites such as work experience and internships are necessary before pursuing an MBA, the reality is that while those experiences can be beneficial, what truly matters is what you've absorbed from them! Advice cannot be generalised for everyone. Your learning journey comprises numerous small pieces that fit together like a puzzle, teaching you skills and making you employable for your future employer. Today we feature the story of Neeraj Kumar, who is an MBA student (Financial Services) at Woxsen University, Hyderabad, now placed with a global fintech firm, Arcesium, with a salary of 19 LPA! Let's discover what Neeraj did right to maximise his MBA experience and how you can implement these strategies in your own journey!

How Neeraj Transformed Himself Through an Experience Like an MBA

To truly benefit from any experience, you must immerse yourself in it wholeheartedly and strive to learn beyond academic teachings. As a fresher, Neeraj embraced the learnings around him and the supportive ecosystem provided by WOXSEN. In addition to the experiential learning pedagogy in his classrooms, he actively participated in various campus activities to apply his knowledge. Neeraj made notable contributions to the finance club and committee, leveraging every opportunity for growth. “It wasn't just academic growth that defined my university experience; My aim was nurturing aspects of my character that would serve me well beyond the classroom.”

I Fast-Tracked My Knowledge of Finance with No Prior Work Experience!

Despite lacking prior experience, Neeraj did not face any major challenge to understand the subjects he was taught, as he was actively applying what he was learning and receiving immediate feedback, so he could leverage that for growth. He seamlessly bridged this gap by engaging in real-life case studies and seeking mentorship from faculty members. “Participating in financial simulations provided a safe space to apply theoretical concepts, gaining practical experience in a controlled environment.” But having the constraint of a controlled environment would hold him back from developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills beyond a point. As in the real world you will have to tackle unstructured problems. Woxsen understands this reality, which is reflected in the way they have designed their curriculum, focusing heavily on learning and immediate application, giving students a taste of what the job will look like in the real world after they graduate. “One of the standout resources for freshers like me was the Bloomberg Finance Lab at Woxsen. This facility offers access to real-time market data and financial tools, to familiarise ourselves with industry-standard resources from day one.”

Extracurricular Activities/Clubs & Committees Are Your Places of Experimentation

What's the purpose of learning if you can't apply and test your knowledge as you progress? And what's even better? Doing so within a community of highly ambitious learners, including your batch mates and friends. Peer-to-peer interaction is a cornerstone of B-school learning. Participating in simulated stock market competitions has been a highlight of Neeraj's engagement with the Finance Club. It offers more than just a test of knowledge—it provides an opportunity to apply financial concepts in a practical, real-world setting. “The adrenaline rush of making investment decisions, analysing market trends, and competing with peers has been both exhilarating and educational.” As our conversation with Neeraj progressed, we increasingly understood the importance of forging strong ties with the industry. In today's rapidly evolving professional landscape, staying abreast of trends is paramount. Woxsen’s robust industry collaboration proved invaluable in this regard, providing students with the necessary skills and insights. Neeraj's internships were instrumental in honing his abilities, for instance at Share India, he analysed financial data for conglomerates such as HUL, HAL, and Dabur, acquiring insights crucial for investment decisions. Upon joining Wipro, he led the NACH project, enhancing trust and efficiency in payment systems across several cities. Working on real projects with companies not only enhanced his skills but also bolstered his confidence in his capabilities. He also cherishes his memories and the quality time he spent with the Institute’s Entrepreneurial Cell, which further gave him access and opportunity to make friends with Investors and Venture Capitalists! “Furthermore, through the Entrepreneurship Cell, I gained access to a network of investors or venture capitalists, which could prove beneficial if I ever consider pursuing my own business ventures in the future!”

Navigating Placement Season & Securing my Dream Job Offer!

Neeraj wrapped up our discussion by reflecting on campus placements and expressing his gratitude for the thorough preparation process. From interview grooming sessions to his final technical round, every aspect was meticulously handled. His confidence on the interview day was bolstered by the decisions he made during his time at university. From peer learning to professor mentorship, industry seminars, personalised placement preparation and coaching sessions, alumni connections, and acquiring real-life skills, Neeraj ensured he was well-prepared to present his best self on the placement day! “I approached interviews with newfound confidence, knowing that I had the tools necessary to leave a lasting impression.” On a closing note, Neeraj leaves us with a final piece of advice—a mindset he embraced throughout his B-school journey. It goes like this “Reflecting back, I am amazed at the transformative power of education and the boundless opportunities it offers for growth and self-discovery.”
