Did you know that Heterosexual privilege is a thing? As heterosexuals, there some things we get by default which many of us might not realize are privileges. A few have been listed below:
Acceptance
As human beings, we all want to be accepted by our family, friends, relatives. Acceptance gives us assurance and a sense of security.
Marriage
Getting married is one of the happiest days of a person's life. As heterosexuals, we are overloaded with everyone's supports and wishes without any judgment and to be able to legally marry the person we love.
Risk-free
There no risk of losing a job, eviction from your landlord, harassment, threats because of your sexuality.
Free to follow your passion
We all have the right to shape our careers in any way we want without being judged for our sexuality
Free to travel anywhere
Travel is one of the most enlightening experiences for most people. And to be able to travel anywhere without having a fear of being mistreated on the basis of sexuality is a gift
Love
All humans love and want to be loved. Can we imagine a world where we can't love openly? For various reasons, like being looked down upon for no fault of ours.
Public recognition and support
Many of us don't realize that support and recognition play an important role in our personal development.
Not called names based on sexuality
We might hardly or never experienced situations where we have been called names like "weird", "disgusting", "abnormal" and so on
Nothing to hide
As heterosexuals, we have had to struggle to come out publicly about our true sexuality for fear of judgment.
Teenage crush
We have never had to hide about our first crush for the fear of being treated a certain type of way by our peers.
Mental health problem
We never had to worry about people treating our sexuality like a mental health issue that can be treated by therapy or counseling.
Being a parent
A few us may or may not be parents yet. Though, we still can relate to the fact that we will not have the fear that our kids may be mistreated because of his/her parent's sexuality.
Lastly, one of the biggest privileges is to not have to worry about any of the above situations to ever happen to you based on your sexuality. So when we have all of these without having to do anything for it? Why do Bisexuals, Gays, Lesbians have to struggle for the same, for no fault of theirs? Sexuality, be it heterosexual, bisexual, gay, lesbian, should be seen as one no less than the other.
