Having always lived in the comfortable environment of home, coming to hostel for the first time was a drastic change. But the change was imperative.
What made the case worse was the idea of sharing my room with two more people I had no clue about. Who they would be? Where they would be from? Will I be able to adjust with them etc? I’m a person really possessive about my belongings and hearing the stories of people who have experienced hostel life petrified me.How they usually share things , some people even borrow clothes (BIG CONCERN for a person who finds it hard to say ‘’NO’’ ) , how there is no privacy anymore. Another thing that petrified me were the mess food stories. Of how there is only water in dal and no dal, the food being just edible and not soul-satisfying tasty. All these things built up my apprehensions about how the next two years of my life will be.
The day to finally shift in the hostel was there. I was more of nervous than excited. I already knew who my roommates for the next one year would be. Apart from their names I knew nothing about them. They both belonged to south India and I was doubtful if we would be able to adjust with each other – another perception I had based on the opinions of people was that people from south India and north India have a lot of cultural differences and find it difficult to adjust with each other. Initially, we were really busy to even talk to each other for more than 5 minutes. I didn’t even open up much and was restricted to pleasantries.
The first week in college was really hectic with long hours of classes and back to back assignments with short deadlines and merely 3-4 hours of sleep. Which was sort of disorienting for a person used to sleeping for 9-10 odd hours. I used to skip my alarm daily and it was my roommates who used to wake me up on time. Also the mess food which was supposed to be by popular opinion tasteless was more than just edible, it was actually quite good. Also, I started getting more comfortable with my roommates and all the apprehensions found their way into the dustbin. Moral of the story- don’t judge a book by its cover. It has been around two weeks into this new lifestyle and slowly learning and adapting.
