Many students look at MBA as a key to accelerating their career in the corporate world. However, an MBA doesn’t guarantee you success. You need to have real conviction to make the most of your MBA and thrive in the corporate world. You have to be proactive in order to make the most of your time in any b-school. Take your internship for example. Your summer internship makes up for one of the most important parts of your MBA, and what you do during this time can be vital for your career. Wonder how students approach their internships? Find out in this article. Team InsideIIM spoke to four students from Lal Bahadur Shastri Institute of Management, focusing specifically on their internship experiences. Following are some of the insights:

Shilpa Rathore, PGDM-General, Specialisation in Marketing
Interned with Hindustan Coca Cola Beverages

Shilpa Rathore had 14 months of work experience before she decided to pursue an MBA. Having worked as an associate consultant before, she wanted to work in a different domain. She was looking for a profile involving field work, and so she managed to get a summer internship opportunity with a leading FMCG company, Hindustan Coca Cola Beverages. During her internship, she was placed in Sales and Marketing.

“I had to learn and relearn
a lot during the internship”

Shilpa told InsideIIm that an FMCG company like HCCB expects its interns to go on field starting from day 1. She was expected to shadow her sales team, and was made responsible for Trade Marketing.  HCCB is involved with digitisation, having launched special programs for retailers to benefit. However, many retailers are skeptical about using such digital programs and platforms; many don’t even own smartphones. Shilpa’s project involved spreading awareness, which took her to 40 markets in Delhi and about 300 Eat and Drink Outlets. She had to explain the benefits of digitisation to these retailers, as well as identify gaps in the process, which was part of her final presentation as well.  *This is a promoted feature.

Mohit Wahi, PGDM Finance
Interned with Deloitte

Mohit Wahi was always fascinated by the stock market. How experts predicted risks was something that really intrigued him. That was the reason he chose to pursue an MBA in Finance. He bagged a summer internship with Deloitte, a dream come true for any student who aspires to work in finance. Not only did he crack the GD-PI rounds, he managed to get a risk profile, which was exactly what he was looking for. Coming from a B-Tech background, Mohit had worked as a developer in Wipro, which gave him valuable work experience. In Deloitte, he was part of the Cyber Risk Department, working on multiple group projects. Part of his project included developing use cases, where one has to identify risks from scratch, and apply analytics.

“I got a chance to present one of
my suggestions directly to a US client”

Mohit’s performance during his internship resulted in him getting a PPO. Currently, he is focusing all his energy on preparing for his job, taking electives that will further prepare him for the finance domain.

Devansh Jain, PGDM Logistics and Supply Chain Management
Interned with Delhivery

Devansh worked as a management trainee in Safexpress for 1 year, and recognised early on that he wanted to work in a supply chain profile. To climb up the corporate ladder, he decided to pursue an MBA, doing his summer internship with Delhivery.

“I was given more responsibility and accountability
than what a normal intern gets”

Right from day 1, he began working in the Full Truck Load, where he got exposed to how logistics and supply chain works. He spent his internship contacting different vendors and retailers, developing a 360 degree outlook along the way. Another thing he learned during his internship was the importance of keeping in touch with the ever developing technology. He was the only candidate out of 10 who was selected for the internship. He believes his passion for work is what helped him make the most of his internship. He was awarded the best project in his batch.

Ashirwad Kumar Singh, PGDM Research & Business Analytics
Interned with Empass Learning

Ashirwad Kumar Singh decided to pursue his MBA, having an interest in a Research and Analytics profile. Despite not scoring a very high percentile, he continued to pursue his dreams, choosing LBSIM for its legacy and alumni.  He managed to bag an internship with Empass Learning, which had a very unique selection process. The first round was an AI round, where the candidates had to solve questions and give an interview against a screen. Selected candidates then moved on to the personal interview round. His project involved research that attempted to understand a recruiter’s perspective on AI based platforms. He further researched the level of awareness of AI based platforms in the market, which led to him presenting his findings and recommending suggestions for his final presentation. He is currently preparing aggressively for his final placements.

“LBSIM offers a lot of mock GD-PI sessions, Resume building workshops, etc.
which really help the students for their placements”

Every student has their own unique perspective on how to approach their MBA. What is clear from their interviews is that in the end, it is your conviction, your drive that will decide where you end up in your career. With the right attitude, nothing can stop you from learning and exploring the corporate world.  Want to know more about how an MBA can help accelerate your career?
