Theresa May was once regarded as one of the greatest leaders of her time, while she will still find her place in the book of legends, but her legacy has certainly diluted. The classic tussle in the Brexit has presented a curious case for future leaders and decision-makers to ponder upon. Here are some of the top mistakes that Ms. May committed during this fiasco :
1. Conviction: While the idea of a prosperous and powerful country was given to the UK, Ms. May never really believed in it. She evidently never had the conviction in her own proposal which led to the downfall of the complete system. Brexit was an uphill battle, and its soldiers (the lawmakers) never gathered any positivity from their leader. Her slogans like “Brexit means Brexit” and “No deal is better than a bad deal “ hardly covered the weak link of conviction.
2. Team Chemistry: Ms. May was often accused of being obdurate to her fellow MPs.While it was fine as long as she was high on polls, but the moment she started losing the majority, the seed which she planted had already matured. Making her teammates feel alienated was one of her biggest mistakes in her career.
3. Sympathy: Lacking sympathy with fellow countries, she payed no heed to the concerns of Ireland. Her signoff for a no-deal found no takers in the parliament. The chain reaction propagated till EU which then aligned itself with Ireland and amidst all this, Britain was left hanging. A show of sympathy never really does any harm, as one could never know how the tables could turn.
4. Keeping Promises: Ms. May learned the proverb “Never make promises which you cannot keep” the hard way. Her promises to negotiate a successful Brexit, keep the country united, and bring prosperity all went down miserably. She even exacerbated the pain of the people by saying that the people who don’t support her ideas are not patriotic. The realization of the masses that they were shown a different picture of the product they had been sold made them lose confidence in her.
This is one classic case of a lifetime of greatness getting squandered at the end by some mistakes. It also shows, no matter who we are, in the end, we all are humans, we all make mistakes, but every mistake comes with its own cost.
