Debayan believed in the power of self from the very beginning and carved his own path. From taking challenges head on to displaying leadership skills whenever the situation demanded, Debayan has made it to India’s 30 Most Employable Graduates of the Class of 2020. Read on to know how. Prior to MBA, Debayan worked as a Data Scientist at ITC Infotech, developing pricing models for a leading Indian LCC and suggesting actionable business insights. At IIM Kozhikode, he has been learning the business side of things and applying his knowledge of Statistics to the various domains of business. He is a team player and as such has been elected as a senior member of two student bodies, where he is continuing to work towards increasing collaboration and bringing out the best in everyone. Besides academics, he also loves quizzing and creative writing, in which he has had multiple achievements. Name an instance where you wanted something and went out of your comfort zone to achieve it OR Tell us the biggest risk you have taken so far in your life. The biggest risk that I have taken so far is not opting for private tuitions, ever, going against the norms of the day. Instead, I used this 'extra' time to nurture my hobbies of Creative Writing and Quizzing. During my school days, I couldn't understand the need for everyone to opt for private tuitions. However, my friends and schoolmates used to tell me that I was taking a big risk. Thankfully I got the support of my parents, who never forced me into doing anything. In the end, my gamble paid off. Besides clearing all board and entrance exams with flying colors, this approach to learning also helped me excel in open-book tests, where the problems are quite often open-ended! On the other hand, I also ended up having multiple achievements, right up to the international level, in both my hobbies! When was the last time someone relied on you? OR What did you do which was purely for someone else - a truly selfless act. During Term 1 of our MBA course at IIM Kozhikode, we had Data Analysis as one of the subjects. Being a postgraduate in Statistics, this course was a cakewalk for me! However, some of my batchmates, especially those from a non-quantitative background, faced a lot of difficulties in grasping the concepts of the subject. So, I volunteered to tutor them. Now, given the intense nature of competition at B-Schools, coupled with the relative grading system, this might seem like a foolish act on my part. However, after reading Col. Chris Hadfield's 'An Astronaut's Guide To Life On Earth' in college, I had realized that helping people become more competitive actually helps one sharpen his competence. As it turned out, not only did I get an A in the subject but all my struggling batchmates, whom I tutored, managed to pass with decent grades! Tell us about a time when you disagreed with an opinion/idea/decision. What did you do about it? During an inter-section competition at IIM Kozhikode judged by students from all sections, there were allegations of deliberately giving low scores in certain events by judges belonging to one section, to performers from other sections. Besides affecting the final standings of the competition, it also led to mistrust and bitterness amongst the students. Even though, at first sight, it seemed like there was no way to prove these allegations, I too disagreed with the final standings. To resolve this issue, I drew on my knowledge of Statistics, to suggest a metric to the organizers, called Spearman's Rank Correlation, which basically captured the degree to which different judges were in agreement with respect to the scores they gave. This helped to revise the final standings, identifying the clear winners in each event. Given that the decision was based on sound theory, no one could question it, and individuals from all sections accepted the final standings. What is the one thing you can claim to have some level of expertise or depth of knowledge in - it could be anything - a subject, a sport, a hobby, a venture, an initiative which has led you to do deep work in that field? Quizzing, which I have been pursuing passionately since my school days, has led me to multiple achievements, right up to the international level. If 10 Million Dollars (approximately INR 75 Crores) is given to you to use it any way you deem fit what would you do with this corpus? I would invest the entire corpus in low/zero risk investments like savings accounts and bonds and use the interests obtained to carry out field experiments with respect to Basic Income. To decide on the target population, the amount to be given to each individual and the timeline of the study, I would take the help of economists and tools like the Lorenz Curve. Contrary to popular belief, pilot studies across the world (Scandinavia, North America, Africa, and even in Madhya Pradesh, India) have shown that people belonging to low-income groups did show fiscal prudence when they were given basic income. The ultimate goal of this project would be to increase awareness (via Social Media, say) about Universal Basic Income (UBI) as a valid option to reduce income inequality and poverty and boost the economy instead, in the future. Given the significant amounts of money involved and the associated prejudices around it, the general public, as well as governments, believe that UBA is not worthwhile, despite it being backed by several notable economists. This perception, thus, needs to be changed.
