The first thing that meets the eye when one enters IIM Shillong is the lush green campus in the abode of clouds. You are bound to be mesmerized by the breath-taking views of the hills surrounding the campus. But this is just the tip of the iceberg and it is only when you become a part of the IIM Shillong family that you experience the true nature of what IIM Shillong has to offer.
The journey of a participant starts with an introduction to sustainability – the foundation at which IIM Shillong has been built. A week-long introduction course on sustainability helps the incoming batch to learn more about sustainability and the practices followed by IIM Shillong to become completely sustainable. A day long expedition consisting of visit to ‘sacred forest’ and a 3-hour long trek is planned for the incoming batch to help them admire the beauty of nature. All activities of the campus ranging from classes to sports to mess have a touch of sustainability to it. Every participant of the campus ensures best possible utilization of resources in all their activities.
The next thing that makes IIM Shillong truly unique is the fact that it is largely a student driven institute. The several committees responsible to help the administration are given complete autonomy over their functioning. The experiences that students gain as part of these committees supplements what they learn as part of the classroom curriculum. It is often said that a lot of the MBA learning happens outside the classroom and this is the perfect example of that.
One of the major reasons that several people opt for an MBA is to network with people who would go on to hold eminent positions in the industry and the fact that IIM Shillong has a relatively smaller batch size goes a long way in achieving that. Among the several interns from different colleges that I met as part of my summer internship, I was the only one who knew the name and whereabouts of all my fellow PGP participants. I noticed that people knew and interacted with just 60-70 participants in their batch where the batch size was huge but it is only when the batch size is smaller that one takes the effort to get to know each of their batchmates.
Of-course these few points are nowhere close to describing the IIM Shillong experience but merely provide a glimpse into it.
Aditya Birla Group
Being a marketing enthusiast, I would love work for Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail Limited if given an opportunity. Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail Limited would offer me a chance to work for a brand that people directly interact with in their day to day lives. Managing brands such as Louis Philippe, Van Heusen, Peter England etc. through insights derived from interaction with various stakeholders and my learnings as part of the MBA curriculum is something that would truly excite me. The hundreds of cases I have gone through during the classes will help me get a head-start in understanding and analyzing the market dynamics and reacting to them through appropriate short-term and long-term strategies.
