Located in the picturesque place far away from the hustle and bustle of a metro city, IIM Shillong provides the ideal environment to learn and grow professionally. With a small campus and an even smaller batch size, one can interact and know everyone in the batch. Peer learning is the most crucial part of surviving an MBA course, and a small batch size facilitates it even more. Friendships that we make in an MBA college will be beneficial once we enter the corporate world.
Guidance is one of the most critical things in an MBA course. Here, the faculty and seniors ensure that the first years get the required help and attention. The faculty in IIM Shillong is supportive and caring. One can approach them anytime to clarify any doubts or to seek any guidance related to future careers. The guest faculties are the best in their field, and the value addition from attending their sessions have been immense. They help the students to understand what works in the corporate life. Also, IIM Shillong has a mentorship program where the seniors and alumni are assigned to first years to help and guide them in college and internship.
Also, the campus is student driven. Right from placements to the club activities, every initiative is taken and completed by students. Organising the annual Entrepreneurship Summit last year with my club members was an enriching experience. We worked tirelessly for two months in getting the speakers, planning the sessions and making the necessary arrangements. The event was a success.
MBA is an intensive course where a typical day contains 6 hours of classes, 6 hours of preparation for those classes and 4 hours of completing the assignments. Even after this, I have to find time for club activities and hobbies. If I am lucky, I get 5 hours of sleep a day. Over a period, the routine can become tiring of not for the beauty of Shillong. Living in a place with incessant showers, cold breezes and beautiful views helps one to relax from the rigor of the course. The sunny mornings with a clear blue sky and the misty evenings are a treat to watch every day. Picturesque places like Cheerapunji and Dawki are 2 hours drive away.
Hence, for me, IIM Shillong is one of the best things that has happened to me, and I am glad that faith brought me here.
Which ABG company would I want to work for and why?
I would want to work with Idea Cellular. Telecom sector has become very competitive since the entry of Jio with its predatory pricing. Idea Cellular has merged with Vodafone to survive and prosper in this competitive environment. To win the telecom war, companies will require the innovation on the part of employees, and I want to one among the many to brainstorm and come with strategies to help Idea Cellular defend and capture the market share. This will be an opportunity to test me against the best in the business. Also, it will be a great learning experience to work in an industry where profit margins have fallen, and three giants are competing to capture the market.
