Situated in the capital of Meghalaya, which means the ‘The Abode of Clouds’, Indian Institute of Management Shillong is currently hosted in a beautiful temporary campus – the summer retreat of the erstwhile Maharajas of the Mayurbhanj dynasty. The institute boasts not just of its academic excellence but also of providing its students two years as the most memorable ones in their lives. There just cannot be a better place to imbibe knowledge and skills to make the world a better place than Shillong, often referred to as the ‘Scotland of the East’, which keeps you so close to the nature that a person cannot ignore thinking of sustainable ways to implement an idea that springs up.
I consider myself extremely fortunate to be a member of the Indian Institute of Management Shillong family as this campus, and the people around have helped me broaden my perspective and have contributed in having a holistic view about business and life on the whole. The eminent personalities from the corporate world visit the campus quite frequently and share their insights, which enables the students to indulge themselves in thoughts, in the way it is done in the corporate world, to approach a particular situation. Various events and competitions are conducted by the students which require a great thought process, ultimately leading to gaining important insights about the industry and the business processes. This valuable mix of corporate interaction during the guest lectures and the corporate events held around the year contributes to approaching the business ideas more constructively and practically.
Not just academics or competitions, the students here share an amazing rapport amongst each other. Owing to the comparatively smaller batch size, the interaction and bonding between the students of the senior batch and the junior batch are very overwhelming. Every individual knows and gets to interact with everybody, both the batches included. The students here celebrate every festival with warmth as a family, wherein the faculties are also invited, and they shower their blessings upon the students.
There goes a saying, “Where there is a will, there is a way”, and the will amongst the students at Indian Institute of Management Shillong to succeed and become responsible citizens of the country is immense. Every individual thrives to arrive at sustainable solutions to business problems or the case studies put forth them. The pedagogy followed, and the application of the teachings is taken seriously by both, the students as well as the faculties. Indian Institute of Management Shillong is definitely unique in its own way.
Which ABG company would you want to work for and why?
I would want to work for the largest apparel brand in the country, i.e., Loius Philippe. The premium menswear brand from Aditya Birla Group has not only managed to top the charts in the department chains like Shoppers Stop, Pantaloons and Lifestyle but has also been expanding aggressively in the last few years after the launch of its youth-oriented sub-brand LP.
I am a loyal customer of Louis Philippe, and the reason behind that is the trust that the company builds in its consumers. Its quality products and the strategy of keeping the consumers at its focal point is something which connects with the consumers, and I would like to be associated with a brand like Louis Philippe and learn the nuances of the business.
