It was 21st June, 2018, when I entered the campus of Indian Institute of Management, Shillong. From the first look, it looked like a small decorated village, with narrow roads, buildings with gable roof and not everything was at the same level. One of the most strange things is the entrance of the North Block Hostel, where the way for entering to the first floor doesn’t need you to climb stairs and the same goes for even the ground floor as well. The weather was as really damp and cold and as said by locals it remains the same all the year round. It was really odd to observe that majority of the hostel rooms and classrooms have no fans. The overall feel I got was quite different, certainly not the one I anticipated.
Fast forward four weeks of my stay at IIM Shillong. When the whole country is getting the brunt of summer, here we wear sweatshirts when we go to have our lunch. I actually experienced the popular tagline of our college ‘Campus In Clouds’ and it is normal for a student here. As we are placed in a valley, it is covered with old pine and rhododendron trees and its scenic beauty is just a treat to observe and appreciate. The Khasi culture has a strong resemblance with the footprint of the institution and hence we strongly believe and practice ‘Sustainability’ in every possible way such as from the straw braid dustbins to the pesticide-free vegetables that are consumed in the mess. Also it is a tradition here that no one, all the 360 participants of both the batches, locks their doors neither from inside or outside at any time. We know the names of each and every batchmate and also know the things they are good at. This is how we live and stay like a closely knit members in a small village.
Aditya Birla Group
Looking forward, I would like to work with Aditya Birla Retail Limited (ABRL), the retail arm of Aditya Birla Group. Being one of the oldest and largest private sector conglomerates and living upto the expectations for such a long is quite commendable in itself. And my experience as a Contracts Engineer in an infrastructure company and my aspiration to have a career in Operations Management, aligns with the opportunity that lies in the huge number of supermarket and hypermarkets spread across the country.
