IIM Shillong - What Is My Campus' USP?

IIM can be a broad target but every IIM has a USP of its own and that happened to be a deciding factor for me to decide which one to target. IIM Shillong has an image associated with the concept of sustainability and has proved time and again that sustainability can be brought into the business without hampering its profitability. No matter how much we claim to be the products of fast and moving world, there is something about values and moral that lingers within you for long and this is something that I witnessed. Where the business world has a bad image for it’s by hook or by crook approach, a method where the values are given a preference over profit, is certainly something to look out for and I am happy I got a chance to be a part of such a society.

For a country obsessed with an MBA degree, you really need to be one of the best to join an IIM. Even though there are a plethora of colleges offering the MBA degree, people in India associate the MBA degree only with an IIM.  My journey began in the second year of my college when I decided to start preparing for the CAT exam. The journey till the CAT exam was good with many sleepless nights and a number of miserably gone mocks on the way but somehow I managed to score a decent percentile in CAT. The post CAT period made me realise that the real test for the B-schools begin after the CAT exam as it was just a screening process and the interviews test your real strength. No matter how isolated from the outside world we try to be in our personal lives but everyone must have heard two or three cases of personal interview of an IIM and have wondered about the depths of knowledge required. It was hard to cover everything under the sun in a short span especially when you are targeting for an IIM. To start with, I was nervous about the interviews as I had never faced one in my life and the first time I was going to face it, too much was at stake. I did better than I expected in the interviews and was just waiting for a call from the college. The results took a long time and did really test my patience but as they say, “All’s well that ends well”. I know this is not the ending but a beginning to something new. I hope this journey teaches me a lot of things and really do transform me into a manager I aspire to be.

The Aditya Birla Group has managed to do this successfully as it has built an image of “Winning smiles, touching hearts.“ I wish to join the Hindalco Industries Ltd. as it has witnessed a huge success in inculcating the social responsibility along with the business. With reasonably well steps taken towards the health sector, the education sector and skills training centres the company has already won the hearts of many individuals. I will be privileged if I get the responsibility of working in the company like this where for every step I take; a million smiles get imparted.
