Having gone through the process of preparing and appearing for CAT, to waiting for the final call, coming to IIM Shillong was like a dream coming true. Receiving the call from IIM Shillong there wasn’t a doubt in my mind as to where I wanted to be. The institute being one of the top institutes in the country is aligned with my future goals and is a step in the right direction.
The biggest advantage of being in an IIM I believe is the diversity and the peer to peer learning gained from this advantage. The first few days of being in Shillong was thrilling. Being away from the Delhi air after two years was refreshing. The clean air and beauty of Shillong left me mesmerised. The college activities begun just a few days later with assignments to complete in the specified deadlines was an experience in its own. Waking through the night, giving up on sleep for days at a stretch was an exhilarating experience. There were a lot of things going on at the same time and I was enjoying all of it.
Soon the foundation course on sustainability began. The whole batch was excited to learn about the new practices of sustainability and its use in business. The 6-day course is special to IIM Shillong as we are known to be the premier campus for the sustainability practices we follow. The course was structured in a way that we got to learn and have fun at the same time. The professors taught us by the virtue of case studies of how sustainable practices are followed in India and around the world. The problems faced by sustainable practices were highlighted in the class and the participants were made to realise that it is high time that we stop talking about sustainability and start acting toward it.
The course was over but one of the best parts was yet to come, The Sustainability Trek! Everyone was excited about the trek in Shillong, after all Meghalaya is called “Scotland of the East” for a reason. We were out from the campus at 6am, and headed to the Mawphlang sacred forest for an amazing experience. The forest was in between the clouds and very clean. The rudraksh trees and mushrooms around the forest were a new sight for me. Walking in the forest made me realise the importance of being sustainable or else we will lose these forests and the natural environment that makes life possible. Next, we were off for the trek. Into the wilds for 4 long hours was seeming impossible. The trek was easier than expected, the natural beauty pushed me through the conditions. Amid clouds, we were off to a wonderful journey walking through mountains and barren lands was energizing. The tired feeling from the past 15 days was relieved that day. I was prepared for the challenges to come. Coming to Shillong seemed like a wise decision at one time but after the first 15 days of being in the campus I have realised that my decision was correct. I am excited for the things to come in this delightful place.
Aditya Birla GroupHaving an interest in marketing domain and having worked in the same role for a few months I want to be working for Aditya Birla Retail Limited. The company is one of the first Food and grocery retailer to receive the food safety certification. A company as such would be the first to adopt the sustainable practices and I can see myself working for this company.
