Yup. First days at internships or new jobs seldom go as planned. Infact, for many people out there, it takes about a year to settle into a new company!
Ask any working professional, and s/he will tell you that the following things bothered her/ him the most at that first job, especially for the first few months.
- Adjusting to new food, sleep and work patterns
- Dealing with stress
- Managing to complete targets/ goals
- Managing your anger/ irritation when situations went out of hand.
- Saying no
- Figuring out the company hierarchy
- Learning how to communicate with managers and co- workers
- Writing strong emails
Most of these problems could have been avoided. If only someone had taught us this stuff before. In fact, someone should have taught us how to ease into water cooler conversations. Or say no to your soon to be boss! Or perhaps write an acceptance email that impresses. Maybe they should have taught how to say no to “too much work.” And yes, that’s a thing. Even after the hectic 2 years at b- school!
Anyway, they should’ve set up classes for this. But they didn’t.
