Yet another academic year. Several MBA aspirants have converted a college of their dreams. Many others are planning on giving entrance exams another shot. Yet others will be facing these exams for the first time this year. One question that is common to all MBA aspirants face is - Is it mandatory to join a coaching institute?

The following questionnaire will help you decide:

1. Are you a self motivated person?

If you are a self motivated person, you will be energetic and self driven to work hard. You will most probably not need an external force to help you prepare for the exams. If you feel you do need an extra push, it would be good to join an institute. Institutes provide you with a mentor and also you get to learn with peers.

2. Are you comfortable with the basics of the various sections in the exam?

If your verbal, logical and quantitative skills are fairly decent you can opt out of joining a coaching institute. Even if you aren't good at one section, you can devote a little extra time for it during your self studies. On the other hand, if you feel you are lagging behind in all or most of the sections, you should consider joining a coaching institute.

3. Do you have the time and energy to devote to a coaching institute?

Most coaching institutes will have regular sessions for you to attend. If you are someone who prefers studying at flexible timings or if you are a working professional, self preparation would be a better choice. You can also research a bit about online classes since these have flexibility in their timings and some are specially designed for working aspirants.

4. How much are you willing to spend on entrance preparation?

Enrolling in a coaching institute will definitely cost more than self preparation. It is important to know your budget before you start. Another option is to join a mock test series which will allow you to study yourself and then test your level of preparation before the actual exam.

In the end, no matter what mode of preparation you decide on, all that matters is that you persevere with motivation and give it your best shot.

All the best!
