The following is Jay Patel's set of responses to a questionnaire floated amongst incoming MBA graduates to determine the top-50 Most Promising Incoming MBA students of 2021. Amongst the massive number of entries and responses being evaluated, Jay's story and profile stood out. Here's his story in his words.

Tell us about a time when you messed up, and what you learnt from the experience?

During the start of my corporate life, I was told to write detailed EOD emails. Because of my hectic work-life schedule, I did not listen to the advice and wrote all the emails briefly. Later on, I was asked by my managers to explain the process and It took me a long time to find everything and explain it back to managers. I learnt the importance of documentation from this experience.

Tell us something about yourself that others may be surprised to know about you.

I sleep only 4 hours a day and still feel very active because of the meditation and good lifestyle.

What have been your two biggest successes in life? What did you learn from them?

Transformation is key to human growth and real transformation is a combination of new mental and operational models. Interning with GJK, post-graduation, to analyse the data of cancer patients was one such opportunity for personal and organisational change. GJK foundation works towards cancer prevention and early detection. I was averse to the idea of coding because I thought coding was a desk job and couldn't be impactful..As I ventured deeper, I found that data used to provide medical assistance was maintained on paper and the essence of timely assistance to the patients was lost due to this. Hence, proper analysis and maintenance of this crucial data could undoubtedly ensure timely intervention in saving lives. I was motivated to unlearn my mindset knowing that my programming skills could make a difference in the medical aid for patients. I learnt python programming and organized the data into a searchable database that stored, protected and processed the required information..However, the permanent employees at the foundation were accustomed to the obsolete methods and the onus of adopting the new system of data analysis was on us. We worked hard to update the system and punched the current raw data into the system. To ensure that the organisation does not revert to the old system as soon as we leave, I demonstrated the new system to the operations team at GJK and trained them. Learning Python programming unknowingly prepared me for the next milestone of my life: to start a career in business analytics with ZS Associates. I learnt that one has to disintegrate old models, construct new ones and then reinforce new mindsets to create long-lasting results. The positive changes I introduced helped me to impact the lives of more than 400cancer patients.

Professionally, what is your ideal image of yourself five years from now? Where do you see yourself?

By 2026, I will advance my career as a management or strategy consultant. In this role working across different industries finance, technology, and retail I will learn the best practices in assessing corporate strategy, business decisions, and financial information. By 2030, I aspire to become a global leader in general management. As a CEO driving the global growth of an organization integrating manufacturing, operations, marketing, and finance to develop new products with an emphasis on innovation.

What is the one skill or characteristic you possess that you are most proud of, and why?

Author George Eliot once wrote It will never rain roses: when we want to have more roses, we must plant more roses. The underlying philosophy of these words has influenced my leadership style. During the COVID-19 pandemic, one of the biggest roadblocks that my team at ZS was experiencing was remotely onboarding new associates. The remote environment did not allow new recruits many opportunities to organically integrate into the company processes and culture. I came up with a new concept called happy hour during which every team member interacts informally with new associates through engaging ice-breaking sessions. My initiative has helped new team members to feel welcome and be forthcoming about the challenges they face. It has helped us to build strong relationships with our new team members and improved our work culture. During my graduation, I was leading the finance team of our cultural fest. Our team was unable to meet our fundraising target due to not being able to garner enough corporate support. I coordinated with the college's social club so that a portion of our collections could be categorised as a social contribution; accordingly, participating companies would be issued corporate social responsibility certificates.

In your opinion, what skills or qualities does a successful manager possess?

Qualities to be a successful manager are listening to everyone and have transparency. Also, be encouraging to all the junior people. Empathy and sensitivity have become of utmost importance. Also, the Manager should be drive to achieve goals and have good decision-making skills.

Tell us about an ethical dilemma that you may have faced, and how you resolved it.

I faced an ethical dilemma during my cultural fest where I came to know that my sponsorship head made false promises of footfall to food vendors. On one side we needed the sponsorship money but it will be a loss to food vendors who come from the underprivileged and hence I did not approve it and eventually after working hard we were able to raise the sponsorship amount.

If you were the CEO of any company of your choosing, which company would you choose and what would your first action be as CEO?

I would like to become CEO for a day of my old firm ZS associates and eliminate performance reviews. l would focus on goals and well-start feedback sessions that will be more frequent, yet brief. Managers and teams will compare notes on the status of their goals, brainstorm about tools that address their individual growth areas, set new goals, and provide a clear understanding of how the team's success fits into the progress of the company. This will help people to not perform only for reviews but work towards a goal aligned with companies mission.
